There is nothing wrong with religion as much as there is no force to coerce somebody to follow any religion. Since religion is based on faith-A strong believe in super natural power or powers that control human destiny- Even morally, socially living in this contemporary world you have to abide by the teaching of the Bible which serves as a template and a guide for anybody to follow up to date. Adultery, fornication and how to live happilly with your neigbour are all subjects that have been dealt exhaustively by the bible. If we dont believe and day of judgement all that have been promised by the bible of reward and punishment are true then what are we going to do? What harm is Christianity as a religion causing Africans as you intend to portray? Missionary schools, provision of social amenities were all started by Churches and today govt has taken over. Why dont you want to called a spade a spade. It is rather some religions that have lately emerged to form groups to kill that have brought a lot of hardships to Africans and evertbody knows that and if Africans wants to question any religion it should be that religion.

Actually people are coerced to follow a religion, particularly in Ghana. There are social pressures, some subtle, some not so. If you talk to any Ghanaian who has changed from Christianity or Islam or even left god-belief altogether, you'll see the pressures people face. Religion is taught in schools as truth. Children are indoctrinated at an early age to believe in the supernatural.
Quoting the 'good things' some religious groups have done does not address the question of 'are the beliefs true'.

In secondary school, it was the same. You get punished for not attending vespers. When in Sixth Form at Mawuli School, I had had enough! I was one of the few who refused to subject myself to caning for not attending morning worship in 1976. Had the aluta against the smallish borbor (red-red) not halted the planned punitive measures against us who refused to be caned, the whole of Ghaan would have heard of me in 1976!
What is worse from the physical punishment is the social and peer pressures from the family, mates, peers, etc.
And, of course, ignorance and superstition are the twin most debilitating cog in the vicious cycle of backwardness and underdevt.

Mr. Prof, you are the evidence of what the Author Leo Igwe is saying. I assume you are a scholar of the scripture (I may also reside wrong with my assumption).
The Elders are worse in this issues with the consciousness enslavement. They did not question the erroneous assumption about God, religion and the insane scriptures they themselves are spreading.
The Elders themselves wants subserviency and obedience for their pathetic living style so they suppress the youth with the insane scriptures and religion, so their lazy thinking and thoughts should not be question.

We blame the whites for our thinking miseries and underdevelopment, but what mostly deprived our thinking we keep it vehemently upright, which is God, the scripture and religion.

I always say, we blacks need the re-engineering of our genes. In default (I am a believer in God), God would have to create a new black man after having destroyed the overwhelmingly greedy and useless stock that fills the world, full stop.

While religion may be described as organized, religion in its true form is the belief or having faith in a higher or lesser power with presumed spiritual powers over one's life and or destiny. Africa or Africans will be no better of questioning religion; we will be better off and served if we took back the powers we acquiesced into the hands of our educate elite class. At the very least the Christian Bible never made mentioned of the wise prophets acquiring wisdom in the four walls of classrooms but by lifes experiences, faith and principles. When Africans get to an era when the classroom educated got no deference from the public at large but looked to people with principles and wisdom we will find progress and development of unparalleled proportion anywhere in the world; we've lived lives on this African continent where the classroom educated continue to piss on our proverbial legs and tell us it's raining. It's not God or any other religion that holds us back because we are yet to see a government on the continent that goes into sessions praying for manner to fall; it's all about getting rich and all the perks they can derive from a dumb and dumber voter public.

I admire the tenacity of Leo in championing thew fight against superstition in all forms in Africa. In the 90s, it was only myself and my good pal Femi who dared write against the debilitating superstition of Africans.
Of course, white scholars had written tons and got tired of writing about how the cosmology and cosmogony of Africans had not evolved beyond the primitive substantive level, and that Africans were incapable of rational thinking and thought.
My good pal Femi has since then written a book on how the gods have been destroying Africa.

These uninspiring tantrums about all religious beliefs is like walking blindfolded from one extreme to another. The stereotyping of all religions, putting them in a straitjacket is very troubling, to say the least, because it undermines your personal credibility and depth of knowledge. I'm a Christian so I can only speak for my religion only. Christianity, contrary to your beliefs, does not create docile minds but it is an attempt to make sense of one's life through seeking for knowledge and wisdom. Matthew 7:7 declares that "Ask and it shall be given you ;seek and you shall find ;knock and it shall be opened unto you". In one of my Church books that we consider as Scripture it is written: "And if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come "; "It is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance ".
Many charlatans who profess Christianity mis-understand,mis-apply and mis-represent the concept of Christianity and must not be used to judge Christianity in general. FYI, the Bible is never at odds with science. Contrary to your ill -founded beliefs and animosity towards all religions, there are many deeply religious Christian scientists who have pioneered significant ground-breaking inventions and discoveries that have revolutionized our thought processes and the way we do many things. If you're not aware of this truth it doesn't mean it's a fallacy or a mere figment of my imagination. According to 100 years of Nobel Prizes, a review of Nobel Prizes awarded between 1901 and 2000, 65.4% of Nobel Prize Laureates have identified Christianity in its various forms as their religious preference. Overall Christians have won a total of 78.3% of all Nobel Prizes in Peace,72.5% in Chemistry,65.3% in Physics, 62% in Medicine,54% in Economics and 49.5% of all literature. Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler,Nicholas Copernicus,Robert Boyle, Blaise Pascal, William Harvey, Wright brothers and Michael Faraday are a few of the long list of Christian achievers. If you don't find such type of achievers among the African Christians it's not the fault of the religion. Your answer is blowing in the wind.
