Consider what Jesus said in John 8:58.This means that Jesus or God was revealed and venerated in other ways before the days of Abraham, probably through the hierarchy existing in paganism. The coming of Jesus on earth then, was a dawn of a new era (Hebrews 1:1) a time for a new definition to the old practises of relating to God. the God of Israel became Known after the call of Abraham but God must have been dealing with his creation before then.

This may sound paradoxical but Hinduism has a long history of atheism. A fourteenth-century (?) Madhava Vidyaranya authored a text titled "Sarvadarsanasangraha."
This text covers the various philosophical schools of ancient India. The philosophy of Lokayata (Charvaka/Carvaka), the first chapter (?) of the aforesaid book, covers strands of atheism in Hindu.
I have grappled with this paradox for sometime now. Part of the difficutly may lie in the fact that Hinduism is both a philosophy and religion, recalling that Yoga, to mention but one of the philosophical strands of Hinduism.
More than that the West did not officially acknowledge Hinduism as "religion" as a result of its polytheistic nature. The story is not the same today. So there are Hindu atheists for that matter.
This is my little contribution.
