Our officials are useless in the sense that they do not think of anything new when they come to power. How can we rely on Akosombo, knowing pretty well that our population is expanding. In this age, how can't we explore other avenues to generate power like solar, wind etc? Even the garbage that is engulfing our cities can be use to generate power but....
We have leaders who care about their stomach and nothing else. Where is Haruna Iddrisu? "Adumdum adumdum no begyae because there are so many options to explore". Yes, and we are yet to see one of those options which he bragged about.

In other words, today, the $534 million MCC facility could add more Solar Power capacity than Sunon Asogli, CENIT, BUI, and VRA/MRP combined. And not a drop of Oil, bottle of gas, or gunny sack of coal would be required.
SOLAR POWER - RIGHT NOW!

My brother, our officials are not useless. The issue is the base load plants should be enough to satisfy the system demand before large scale renewables. In the evening there should be a plant to replace the solar. The country can rather encourage individuals to have solar at the roof top. Investigate to find out the area covered by the 2MW in Navorongo. It will shock you.

Why can't NGO'S in Navrongo built roof top PV cells to generate solar power for the people of Navrongo, while Businesses in Tema or Kumasi use solar energy to generate power?

By scale, we mean ~100MW at 4-5 locations provide industrial scale, cheaper than solitary systems, in the aggregate, in the medium- to long-term
If you will note, this essay is about alternative use of the $534 million MCC grant.
When the US started to industrialize, they did not leave it to solitary individuals and companies to provide power, rail roads, and other public infrastructure. etc.
In fact, even today, may cities, states, and the US federal government itself, own and operate power production centers all over the US.
There is a good reason for all of that - discussed in many of our essays recently.
Same should be true for Ghana at this stage. The only condition is ensuring funds go to items earmarked for those items, that cost are recovered.
But, it all must begin with prioritization, by Ghana's officials.
Otherwise, we could sell Akosombo, and all others and let everyone provide for themselves, like the libertarian would want us do.
And it will never work, has never worked anywhere in the world.
People will stop depending on government when officials stop depending on government, the IMF, World Banks, etc.
Lastly, at least we know the people/workers pay taxes on their incomes! All the top ~350 public officials don't.
Thanks.

Hei! Kofi Buah, minister for petroleum, roll up your sleeves and get involved in "hands-on" execution of your proposals to add value to Ghana's derisory share of our own natural resource - OIL or increase the shelf life of petroleum products.
Foreigners like Tullow and Vodafone know Ghanaian leaders are lazy and full of shit, so they are exploiting Ghana to the max.
And it's true. Ghana leaders are real shit! Always passing the buck!
Ghana leaders have a lot to learn from Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum who has SINGLE-HANDEDLY, in less than 25 years, transformed DUBAI from a desert wasteland into an infrastructural masterpiece using the export revenues of just one single natural resource - OIL!
DUBAI IS NOW THE JEALOUSY OF WESTERN LEADERS.
GHANA LEADERS ARE LAZY, CORRUPT AND CLUELESS.

Our sense is, public officials, particularly those making less than optimal decisions in the interest of the public, have no immunity to even verbal abuse. Therefore, they have an obligation to respond in the name of the public who pay their salaries and monthly allowances, in part, to respond to questions and issues discussed by the public.
This essay touches on public policy - energy to drive industry and for homes. And it asks a question: Are those official signing energy contracts and setting up energy initiatives, are they stuck on stupid, or not?
What is their plan for Solar Energy right now!
THanks.

Generating power on a large scale for national use using solar sources may not be the cheapest for us as a country at this time. Most of Ghana's electricity currently is being generated by hydro power. It is proving not to be that cheap because of the problems we are facing with water levels following changing rainfall patterns. Solar is similar. The initial capital outlay is much higher than thermal power plants and even coal powered plants. China, India, Brazil and most of the emerging economies of the world generate most of their power from thermal sources because they are cheaper. As suggested by some commentators, solar powered plants can be installed on small scale by households for their own use thereby reducing the demand on the national grid.

Here is the deal: Right now, cost for solar power is lower than thermal gas, coal! And as you note, Ghana currently has no solution for low water levels in hydro dams.
