"...I have also recently directed the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission to investigate and expand research on the possibilities of solar energy, which is already going on at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. It is estimated that even one-tenth of the solar energy failing on the earth’s surface would be enough to produce an amount of energy several times the amount generated at present. In Africa we have no lack of sunlight, and the development of solar energy should, in fact, be one of our main scientific preoccupations..."

The idea of photovoltaic effect was discovered by one Edmund Becquerel in 1939 when Nkrumah's parents even never exist. And the first solar cell was invented in 1941 so what is the noise making. Nkrumah only tried to replicate what was happening elsewhere around the globe. Everything Nkrumah did was just a copycat. Just as simple as that. Nkrumah became the fish president at a time when ghana lacked virtually everything as far as the human development index was concerned. Ghana needed schools, hospitals, energy, factories to process our raw materials, roads and railways to facilitate transportation and Nkrumah just did that without sweat because funds were readily available in those days, and there were not too many create loot and share ndc criminals around at that time..
Some of us are smart to read the minds of Kwarteng and prof Lungu who have the penchant to read and reproduce any stupid stuff that is already in the public domain and readily accessible to any idiot out there. By elevating Nkrumah above any human being that has ever existed on the planet earth, they hope to run down the then opponent of Nkrumah, that is Danquah and by extension, the NPP , so that the ndc can have field day to continue looting and perpetuate their incompetent rule on Ghanaians . This is precisely so because these rabble rousers make noise about Nkrumah but never vote as Nkrumahist, hence the inability of Nkrumah's cpp to go over the 1% mark they have registering since the inception of the 4th republic. I think this 2 pensioners or retirees can have a better way to enjoy their time than this daily nonsense about Nkrumah was this and Nkrumah was that.

Nii Teiko wrote nothing sensible to congratulate him about, but as you are just as foolish as him, you think he wrote something wise.
You should have corrected him by telling him that Nkrumah was born, officially 21 Sept. 1909, long before the 1930s, and so his parents were certainly around by then! And he left the Gold Coast to the US in 1935, so he was overseas when the mentioned discovery was made.
Yes, Nkrumah spoke about not re-inventing the wheel and adopting and adapting the store of world knowledge we Africans had also contributed so much to; in fact, even claim origination for. Baidoo posted an article in which he attacked Prof. Lungu or so for allegedly writing that Nkrumahists must invent the wheel. In one swoop, Nkrumah's speech debunked him totally.
Btw, Francis and Prof Lungu are not retirees, but what about if they are? Is Akufo Addo you blokes want to foist on us by all means not many years passed his retirement age?
And what about if Nkrumah is dead? I just checked this a while ago and found out that Jesus Christ, Mohammed, Adam Smith, Isaac Newton, etc, etc, were long dead but there are millions fervently following their ideas at this very moment! Why should it not be same for the unsurpassed Showboy too, voted by BBC listeners as Africa's Man of the Millennium? Yeah! The greatest African in the past 1000 years! You hear that??? the Man has pot forward the solutions to Africa's problems decades ago before his death, so why should we not compulsorily learn about those solutions he offered before his death?
Only fools like you think he is dead and gone with his ideas he pieced together based on existing world knowledge during his time. Are those ideas still relevant or not? Should they be advocated or not?
methinks, when you listen to Akufo Addo, he sounds more Nkrumaist in his industrialisation plan for Ghana than the NDC. In fact, even Kufuor was more Nkrumahist in his policies than the PNDC and NDC under Rawlings. As for Mills and Mahama, I really don't know what they were/are about. It is simply foolish on your part to think that we pro-Nkrumahists write what we write in order to give cold comfort to the NDC, and not to make Nkrumah's agenda known to all and sundry. Didn't we in 2000 join in voting for Kufuor in the 2nd round in order to get a deserved change in the rulership of Ghana?
Surely, when we eventually put our house in order, the majority of Ghanaian voters, not even born when the CPP was in power, should and would have known what we stand for.

Good one Andy-K.
These uneducated morons are abusing the privilege of a free internet forum to defecate where better people of higher mental stature and superior dignity than their parents, congregate.
If they truly believe in the nonsense that they are being paid to daily pollute this platform with, under multiple monikers, I would imagine that with the kind of self-demeaning mindset that they have been cursed with, they would avoid reading and commenting on some of the politically vital subjects such as this one. Strangely however, and as shameless as they are, it seems that they rather are invariably the most regular, consistent and frequent readers and contributors to articles that are in favor of the progress of Africa. Perhaps it is their subconscience that pushes them to keep on coming back for more of the kind of 'medicine' that will once again resurrect them back into the company of human beings.
We are not befuddled nor swayed by the childish efforts of this handful of screwed up people to present themselves in a multiplicity of various monikers to give the false and asinine impression that there are many of them who are against the progress of Africa and Africans. And I wish to state emphatically that any African who stands against the likes of Kwame Nkrumah, Lumumba, Ghaddafi, Mugabe, Nasser et al, is probably in the pay of our historical oppressors, or plain stupid - or whichever way one looks at it, definitely against the progress of Africa.
The consistent vulgar impressions, willful self-inflicted ignorance and the demented substance of their contributions alone, gives their game away and exposes the evil machinations as that of just a few people. But for the fact that they are evidently of the stock of the Danquah-Busia terrorist gang, I would have conjectured that the NDC would have happily employed them to manufacture more phantom votes for the NDC for the next elections.
Their desperation has become so frantic that they now resort to female names to conceal their already multiple individual monikers in the vain, futile and silly hope that discerning people will be fooled by such school-playground antics. Now 'Nii Teiko' writes some rubbish or the other and 'he' is transmogrified into 'Bob' to congratulate 'Nii Teiko'. In his lethal cocktail of ignorance, unbridled stupidity, sheer ethnic bigotry and juvenile impetuosity, 'Bob Nii Teiko' even postulates that Kwame Nkrumahs parents had not been born in the 1930s, when he Nkrumah himself was born in 1909.
On the fair premise that two evidently daft people cannot be so unforgivably and simultaneously stupid, and therefore, it must have been the same person commenting, 'Bob Nii Teiko', turns around to congratulate 'Bob Nii Teiko' for his blissful gaffe.
Let me assure them that swimming against the tides of history is a wasted effort that can only end up in abject failure. The earlier they get their act together and realize that they are living in a muddled time warp, the better it will be for them and their childrens children yet unborn. How would they have taken it if they had grown up only to be publicly confronted with the unfortunate fact that their father, or grand-father or great-grand-father was a mere imbecile who fought on the side of our oppressors against the progress of the black race?

I'm quite amazed that the both the government and the private sector are not doing enough to resolve this issue. Since Kwame Nkrumah's Volta dam, We haven't been able to create another and even think about another possible source of energy. All our leaders do is big talk no action; Ministers and MPs are full of insults and no ideas to move the country forward. Until we shun political bickering and really begin to think of our beloved country, we will continue to be the laughing stock for other nations. We beg for lots of money from so called first world countries but lack of accountability. We just spend and not create anything and that is a perishable recipe. Brothers and Sisters, we need leaders with true vision and guts to lead; instead selfish and money hungry venoms with lots of selfish incline.

When comrde Mkey Gyeamreah posted this speech on Okyeame in the '90s, he silenced the anti-Nkrumah against people. Her eon Ghanaweb, thanks to anonymity possible, they can only hurl invectives at the good messenger who brought us this piece to show us what we had lost by the dastaadly overthrow of the Nkrumah regime. Had Nkrumah stayed in power for another 4 years, there won't be dumsor in Ghana today, and Ghana would have become an indutrailised country with the completion of all those factories and projects already under constructuion when the coup occurred. My father was never a Customs Officer and never worked at the Tema Harbour proper. He was an Acct-Gen. staff who supervised the Long Room far away from the harbour, with additional role over the Airport . When he became sick and died in Dec. 1982, seizing cars at the Tema Harbour was not an issue, as Ghanaian economic, "refugee" hustlers in overseas countries were not bringing in cars, some which they stole, which they couldn't afford to pay taxes on. Besides it was easy bring cars from abroad then. Students and those who have been living and working abroad for over a year didn't have to pay any taxes on their personal effects, so it was a lucrative business for some students to be posing as frontmen for some importers and bringing home cars, fridges, TVs, etc., each year duty free! Some arrived with 3 cars, 6 deep freezers, etc. as "gifts" for family members. It was a difficult practice to curb. Govt responded eventually by slapping duties on all!
I remembered Kwaku Danso and Co. on Okyeame writing a petition in the '90s to restore the old order.

Did you read what I wrote above?
Btw, were cars being stolen from Tema Harbour indeed? And, as far back as the late 1970s? I thought some top govt officials (of both the NDC and NPP), from the 90s, were masterminding the "auction" of those cars to themselves at prices lower than even the duties imposed on them?
Unfortunately, my father died long before the practice started, even though he had already decided, before he assumed duty at the Long Room, not to drive anymore 'cos of what he thought was the spate of reckless driving and his BP. Even that, he wouldn't have participated in that cheap acquisition of a car if it was happening. He'd have fought against it, as he started doing against a lot of revenue leakages practices he found out to his shock.
Of course, he could have got new car genuinely and properly if he had wanted a replacement for his Mercedes he abandoned with a fitter who substituted the gear box with that of a Peugeot one, all 'cos Briscoe was down! The bastard!
Anyway, how can the brothers and cousins of these luxury car thieves in the US and Canada be calling someone a car thief? Who are behind those rackets? Which ethnic group do they come from? Not the Akan ethnic group?
Look! My father and his British partner were co-opted into public service on contract by the Nkrumah regime and were being paid expatriate remunerations in 1960, and he died still on that contract, with a lot of his entitlements not paid to him because of the envy of some. That, despite court judgements in his favour. The records are there. It is something that I am pissed about. I won't sit down and allow some dirty bastards and scions of illiterate peasants with some modicum of education insult his memory.

In hindsight, it is such a pity that Ghanaians threw away the baby and the bath water!!!
I agree with 'MODIN SANE' that "Nkrumah was far ahead of his peers". Ghanaians and, indeed, the world, is sadly trudging back to 1964 when this luminary laid out his elaborate plans for the alleviation of the plight of humanity through science.
He patently demonstrated his repugnance to the use of nuclear weapons and power for mass destruction. In 1962/63 he sent Ghanaian volunteers as human shield to Agadir, Morocco, to protest the French nuclear bomb test in the Sahara.
His foresight, his intentions were true and genuine. His only fault was that he lived far, far ahead in the future of all of the world which is now warming up to the ideas of Kwame Nkrumah on atomic and nuclear pursuits.
I might say that his constant references to socialism and the assistance and contributions by the Soviet Union in partnership for concretizing and achieving his ideals, was to secure the wherewithal and scholarships and facilities in higher education, learning through which many Ghanaians were trained and schooled in the Eastern bloc. He has pointed out that the Akosombo hydro-electrical project was funded by the United States at the instance of President Kennedy. Does not counterbalance his hobnobing with communist Soviet Union? If it were not for he Akosombo project, Ghana would have long been on the auction bloc by now.
In this regard, while building the infrastructure for his industrialization programme, for the country to fully benefit from the training, he sent many young Ghanaians abroad to study.
Many people might have different views and interpretations on Nkrumah's world political philosophy, but if this speech at the foundation laying ceremony at Kwabenya were to be read impartially and without prejudice, the National Liberation Council (NLC) did not have to invite Sir. John Cockcroft, the British atomic scientist to simply rubberstamp their own short-sighted views that Ghana was not yet ripe
to undertake projects and studies in the atomic sciences.
Today, Prof. Allotey and other Ghanaian scientists and mathematicians are quite a proof that Kwame Nkrumah had a lot of foresight! He was far, far ahead of us all!

Solar energy is one of Africa's most prized possession and freely available resource. Look at how South Africa has made it a point to provide their country with a constant supply of energy thus furthering their economy through productivity. Ghana on the other hand is more interested in having 'batakari day' instead. I looked at the overview stats about Ghana on the home page and it points out that it's economy is based largely on handouts from other nations. What are we waiting for? This country was the one that encouraged other African nations to stand up for themselves and now we have become the doormat for the world. Let me help it hit home then; what would Kwame Nkrumah say if he were still alive? Ever wonder why so many Ghanaians leave and don't want to come back except to come home and die? It's because of lack of progress. It's not that we don't have the same opportunity as our neighbors, it's just that we go after absurd things like rap music and fads that don't lead anywhere. Let's all just take a moment and look at how far we want to go and what to do. Let's start by taking a page out of South Africa's solar energy project because we have the same capapbilities.

"The Ghana Academy of Sciences should not be just a body of learned men elected for their distinction and eminence. It should be a part of our national life, serving the people of Ghana, working with them and helping to bring science and scientists into the closest possible relationship with their lives."
Yet, when was the last time we heard the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences engaging in the discourse on progress in such matters; or offering a way forward in times of crisis?
Francis Kwarteng, it is not enough to merely reproduce what Nkrumah or somebody said at such and such a time. But rather, you must show how what was said is relevant today and how they enable us to see our way clear out of the quagmire. To wit, SOLUTIONS to our problems!!!

WE SAY: At least Francis Kwarteng gets a 5 in our books. And all the learned at the Ghana Academy of Sciences What, get a ZERO.
In fact, we imagine today, some of those "learned at the Ghana Academy of Sciences What" were responsible for the destruction, sale, burial, and give-aways of the Kwame Nkrumah legacy.
In that sense, Francis Kwarteng even improves on his score, in our books. Reading the comments, we get to experience the sense so many commenters never knew about the content of this speech 51 years ago.
That is an important service in our book - unpolluted by Francis Kwaretng's views and oipnions.
ITEM: The last time we visited the "Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences What" website, it was as pathetic as we've ever seen anywhere. In fact, Professor Amoako-Baah's website for KNUST Political Science beat Academy's website.

After such powerfully uplifting words of encouragement, love and hope, is this the response - the bickering, name calling and downright disrespect of each other and therefore of ourselves - is that truly the only kind of energy we can summon up in the interest of our common goal, our country,oh Ghanaians? What is up with us? Is this just a forum to let off steam and make someone else feel the pain we're feeling because we can? What is up with us, Ghana? When were we taught that it was OK to deliberately disgrace ourselves and thereby our families in this manner? So this is our new kind of sport? Surely we can do better! WE MUST DO BETTER!
Let us love Ghana, let us love one another!

Abra, thanks for your most uplifting words too. As one person who is involved in the negatives you enumerated, I think I need to respond to yours.
If you have followed the trajectory of the whole fracas, you'd have noticed that I was targeted and the good memory of my father insulted as a car thief, for merely commenting on what Nyebro Yaw posted. And this obnoxious habit of coming to insult people on Ghanaweb was started by people supporting the NPP and they have continued up to this day. In the past years, some of us do our best to avoid or respond to them, if something worth responding to was mentioned in the midst of the insults but we avoided insulting them back. Now, their cup is full! When I can afford the time, I shall take them on, and allow others to discuss the subject matter of an article or news. If they want to trade insults, let them trade them with me. I am a fad of the subject of insults as a cultural trait or political tool. It is not all a bad thing, as they can serve to control social or political behaviour.
Some others not supporting the NPP responded years back and started insulting them too. When they over do it, for instance, in insulting back the Akan ethnocentric bigots by insulting all Asantes or Akans, I do not hesitate to upbraid them and tell them off. It'd be most idiotic for say an Ewe NDC supporter to come and insult all Akans when the Akan voters for the NDC no doubt outnumber Ewe voters for the NDC! NDC supporters are thus essentially handicapped when it comes to repeating ethnic stereotypes, since the party members know, with very few exceptions, that they derive support for electoral success from all over the country.
Anyway, until those uncouth NPP elements stopped their insults and expressing their ethnocentric bigotry, there will be no respite from the counter-insults. In fact, it'd get worse, for them. I'm composing a "halo" for them.

My Brother,
Please accept my sincere apology on behalf of those among us who would seek to bring into disrepute your father's name. None of us should sit idle and allow that our parent(s) be vilified.I do appreciate your anger. Indeed many of us of African descent have tried M.L.King's way - the peaceful way - to no avail, until we resorted to Malcolm X's way - the violent way. In the end that is what brings decisive change, unfortunately.
Having said the above, I trust you can also appreciate my point which is the surreal picture our reaction seems to paint of our intellectual, spiritual, emotional, individual, collective, cultural, and patriotic awareness after reading the above article; and this is exposed to friend and foe who will use it against us, Ghanaians, if/when the opportunity presents itself.
Please continue to share with us your wealth of experiences and knowledge about our history. We need to know.
Thanks.
