The eminent professor has taken time to express his thoughts on the exemplary demonstration of the effectiveness of voluntarism. Hopefully, the lessons he outlined and the benefits he enumerated will get noticed by all in our society, not just politicians and government officials, religious institutions, but also the broader community of NGOs. Thanks to the professor for taking time and space on ghanaweb to express his experiences and thoughts.

Sometimes, when one has opportunity to visit somewhere, to go preach or listen to a talk, one has a responsibility to do some research, up-front!

Fact is, this essay, sadly, reads like an adulation of Mormonism (Church of Latter Day Saints), and the benefits Prof Akosa thinks will accrue to Ensign College of Public Health, Kpong.

Fact is, even today, "...love and support for the needy, distressed and vulnerable...one of the major spiritual heights..." is not equally available to all who leave even in Salt Lake City, or Utah, or every other place in the US.

We only need to review the record of Mitt Romney, the foremost Utah politician of the day, to know that there are more sides to the story Prof Akosa spins on these pages.

Strangely, either through ignorance or self-selection, the reader will never know that Mormonism and the Church of Latter Day Saints are the same.

We therefore encourage everyone, including students and facility of Ensign College of Public Health, Kpong to do some research, find out how the Church of Latter Day Saints has accommodated Blacks, Women, and other minorities in the US over generations, in "...love and support for the needy, distressed and vulnerable...(and)...major spiritual heights...," to get a better perspective of the value of the new association.

Perspective!

So, the critical mind in us asks: Who is it that sponsored Prof Akosa's visit to Salt Lake City, Utah?

We can all be critical and reflective, without condemning!

BUT, we certainly do not want "blow-jobs" of undeserved, unearned ADULATION!

For Kwame Nkrumah's Ghana's sake!

I'm no professor nor a celebrated scholar but with very little education and a very fair mind I can understand that Professor Akosa is greatly impressed with what the Mormon Pioneers have done with the arid desert of Utah since they arrived there about160+ years ago, pursued by their enemies and the United States Army. The indisputable truth whether you like the Mormons or not is that they succeeded in turning the desert into a fruitful land. In1983 when Ghanaians had begun wearing Rawlings Chain the Mormons had enough to send some relief aid to the hunger stricken Ghanaians. Ghana is not the only beneficiary of the Mormons Humanitarian Aid Services. Many beneficiary countries in the world and the Catholic Relief Agency through whom they channel and distribute all their relief supplies around the world will attest to this. That's not all. Today, Utah, without any rivers unlike Ghana, supplies power and water to her neighbors. Their ingenuity allows them to collect the water that melts from the ice on the mountain tops and turn it to their benefit .Utah has an economy better than most states in America. If these are not commendable then what else are? And if the arid desert Utah can do so much with so little or perhaps nothing then Ghanaians have a lot of questions for all their leaders from Nkrumah to Mahama. Ghana is blessed with more than average natural and human resources for a country of its size so is it not a paradox of tragic proportions that we have to go with bowl in hand to borrow money outside our shores? What don't you understand,Professor, or you don't just like the Mormons? Well this is not about the Mormons but it's everything about a wealthy but poor Ghana.

Or that, because "PROFESSOR AKOSA IS AN NKRUMAIST", we cannot in fairness critique what he wrote about that Church and its relationship to Utah?

Even so, it is you who brings Nkrumah into the US-centric discourse, saying Nkrumah has some answers to give about Ghana's development, just like Mahama, Kuffour, Rawlings, NLC, etc.

Hope you see where we get with that defense, and that statement!

To the extent fair comments have no colors, we stand by our initial comments. To the point, it is not all honky-dory "Profound humanitarianism".

After all, there were native Americans in "Utah" before there were Mormons in "Utah". That word itself was derived from a native American language.
