First of all, I agree totally that what she said is crap! Indeed, vintage crap. However, I think she is being misunderstood. I posted this earlier, edited for effect.

The confused woman said children should be taught in their "mother tongue", not a chosen Ghanaian language. The question of which Ghanaian language to be chosen therefore does not arise at all, as that shall defeat her basic, simplistic premise: other countries developed 'cos they teach their children in their mother tongues. Since Twi is not the mother tongue of Gas, Ewes, Dagombas, in fact, the majority of Ghanaians, we can expect Twi to be used as the chosen language. Not even any other single language. Hence, every child must be taught in the mother tongue, that's, if the fathers of kids from wives who don't belong to the same ethnic group as them shall agree to such a thing.

Of course, it is all humbug! We have the experience of Malaysia's M. Bathir to remind us of what such a policy of teaching everybody in Malay diud to the disadvantaged Malay pop. he taught he was helping. The Indians and the Chinese made sure their children get the best of English language education privately and increased their worth tremendously and thus became the partners to the foreign investors, while the Malay graduates struggle to speak English properly and were still relegated. One of Bathirs last actions before he left office was to re-instate English as a medium of instruction in schools.

Some of us shall not sit down and allow this woman with backward thinking to ruin our people. By all means, kids in class one to say 3 should be taught in their mother tongues, while being taught English as well. The privileged children who go to preparatory schools begin to speak English even before they master their mother tongues, if they learn it at all. English then is their mother tongue!

Language alone is not enough to engender devet. It is the cultural pathos, values, attitudes, etc., that count most. And those things in Ghana are simply anathema to a civilised devt. Those are the things we need to change; not the language of instruction.

I suspect something is being taken out of context. I doubt if the Minister can really mean that we should jettison English in favour of "mother tongue" as medium of instruction at all levels of education and that this should happen tomorrow!

It will be good if the minister comes out to explain herself properly to all Ghanaians and/or tell us the well-worn politician's excuse: I was quoted out of context.

But the Minister's attitude during the Ghana came last in test episode earlier in the year was also appalling. She's probably not good material for a minister's post but Ghanaians are in awe of people with PhDs. And that's what we get...

I have never heard anything soooo stupid in recent years. I think some Ghanaians should be banned from attaining Ph. D; some of these guys just make education look foolish. With judges being so corrupt, Naana Opoku blames underdevelopment on the only unifying language – the lingua franca English.

The lady should consider translating “Light Amplification by Simulated Emission of Radiation, Electroencephalogram, electro-mechano-acoustic circuit, photoelectric effect’ and see it she is making sense.

I have had the occasion to say many times before that the NDC is a disease - a contagious mental disease. If not, what the hell has happened to this fine woman - a professor at that?

Clearly the woman is not the archetypal vulgar NDC activist, but I suspect that through many years of close association with the likes of her Deputy, Okudjeto-Ablakwa, the moral and intellectual standards of this poor woman has continued to decline and degenerate to the point that she is also now a subject of public ridicule.

She is completely out of sync even with the material situation on the ground around her and the Ministry that she supervises.

Permit me to illustrate my point through a recent encounter. Just the other day I was on an errand through Accra central which took me through Bukom. For readers who are not familiar with the dire conditions of Bukom, let me say that, through no fault of the people who live there, that part of Accra represents the most despicable depths to which human society can sink to. It is so bad that, many other residents of Accra would not even as much as drive through Bukom for fear of health considerations and personal security.

Now as I was walking to reach my destination, I passed by several groups of very young school-children who had closed from public school and were returning home to Bukom. What struck - or fascinated me was that, these 4 to 6-year olds were speaking impeccable basic English amongst themselves. At least the quality of the basic English they were speaking was far better than the basic English I had heard spoken by our Ministers and especially Parliamentarians. In the brief moments that I was within ear-shot of their conversations I could hear them properly pronouncing the definite article 'the' of the English language instead of the corrupted form of 'de' as most wastefully educated Ghanaians with even PhDs routinely and persistently say. In addition, the linguistic elocution of these little children from extremely deprived Ga homes was generally amazing. It dawned on me that the quality of teaching in our public schools was not that bad after-all and that there was some hope for our little ones.

Relating this encounter back to the subject at hand, I do not think that whatever language that children are taught in at school, necessarily improves or worsens a childs intellectual ability or progress. I believe that a childs intellectual progress is dependent on the quality and substance of education that the child is given access to. If proper Ga children in the wastelands of Bukom could express themselves so well in English - and probably better than they would in their native Ga language, then what is the Minister talking about? The English language today is not just a language. It is also a certificate to function globally. It is no more the property of the English people than it is for all those countries that the British colonized at one time or the other in history.

To now belatedly pretend that we have not been thoroughly psyched with the English language to the extent that we will be rendered totally flat-footed if we dared off-load it as the major means of instruction and as the official language, is to pretend or hallucinate that the world is flat.

For instance even though English was the medium of education, the nationalist substance and quality of education made available to Ghanaians during the period of Kwame Nkrumah significantly projected Ghanaians as well as our intellectual and professional ability throughout the world to take up more than our fair share of prominent posts in all the major international organizations of the world. These included the UN and all its major subsidiary institutions, the World Bank, the AU(OAU) and many others. That quality nationalist education in English is in fact what has sustained this country up to recently.

That our educated elite are failing to perform the most basic administrative tasks in their offices today, is testimony of the break from that serious nationalist education system and not because of the linguistic means of instruction.

I do not think that the Minister of education gave even one minute thought to her bizarre wish to conduct our education in local languages. If she had, she would not have considered - much more, come up with this ridiculous and near-insane idea that has the potential to spark ethnic conflagrations throughout the country - not to mention the envisaged monumental and infinite costs of transforming all educational material and subjects into our various under-developed, limited and short-sighted languages.

Come on Education Minister, be serious!

Basically, you either you don't know the etymology and morphology of the English language to case insinuation like the above. In fact, listening to kids in Western countries reason - I am talking about UK, the US, France, Germany and Spain among others, you'd find out their reason power is really so strong they outdo to a considerable degree our parliamentarians. Listening to them talk, every time, there are times you want to think they just relay someone's ideas. Not only do they reason like adults but they have the appropriate vocabulary to offer very stunning logic of thought you'd find lacking in our men in politics. And I am talking about kids below twelve years old.

Speaking a language and thinking in the language is very different where the nature and amount of vocabulary and expressions are very important.

As a linguist I have studied our local languages, their construction and vocabulary and found out we are light-years away from giants like English. The structure and etymology of local languages, especially the Twi and Ewe follow the same structure for the most past. Extending it to other indigenous languages in Ghana just follows the same type construction. You can't manipulate these languages to form new words like you could in English. In English, you could invent your own words every time to explain situations and your interlocutor would understand. In the local languages where calling some objects is reduced to description to come up with the name, it is often difficult or impossible to come up with a name.

When you look at the Western countries, you'd find out all other languages strain to catch up with English, and that's just the problem. So adopting a national language at this time in a so-called bid for development is rather myopic, to say the least.

Those who want to have a local language as the medium of instruction in schools should go ahead and set up private schools and send their own children there. Of course they would not send their children to Twi-language schools. Why should anybody want that when it is a sure path to nowhere ?

The poorer people in Ghana already know that English is the language go status and anybody who can afford it sends their child to a private school- notifier fun or display but tolerant and master the English language.

People know what they want and do not need arrogant politicians and bureaucrats to tell them what to do. it is more than likely that this minister sends or has sent her own children to a private school to make them fluent in English.

Already the biggest socio-economic divide in Ghana is between those who have command of the English language and those who do not.

This whole argument is really much ado about nothing ! An ethnic language such as twi , no matter how widely it is spoken will never be accepted as an official language in Ghana and it cannot be imposed lest the country be thrown into civil unrest and even war.

This argument crops up every now and then and quietly dies off till another stupid person brings it up again.

Meanwhile life goes on and so does the culture of mediocrity that prevails in Ghana.

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang's idea is ludicrous and misguided attempt at 'nationalistic triumph'. I'm not quite sure she has reflected on the impact of her idea and the ethno-cultural consequences for our national identity.

Before I go any further a question for you the reader and brother Bokor - 'what's the population of India and what's their language, how about China their population and language used there? Hindu for India and Mandarin for China but note that both countries have so many dialects or local languages. I'm NOT against English language as it's good for them whereas any Ghanaian language it's the best for Ghana. Without your mother tongue one has NO soul. Why were you born in Ghana but not UK or elsewhere. How will you feel if I come to live with you in your own house and dictate to you, to speak only my dialect, eat my kind of food or live my lifestyle but all these doesn't suit you? Local language , yes any Ghanaian mother tongue WILL be the the best for the nation, BRAVO soul sister Dr Opoku-Agyemang you have our full support and blessings. Oh , my beloved brothers and sisters , is this the kind of legacy we want to pass on to the generations to come ? Can't we see what politics has done to Ghana ? We still can point out the minister's mistakes to her without insulting or calling her name.
