I hope people will stop telling us that Nkrumah was great BECAUSE of the prizes and honours he collected. Nkrumah is NOT great because he was voted Africa's man of the millenium or because he ammassed numerous honorary doctrate degrees or because things were named after him. His greatness, his actual achievements, all come BEFORE those honours. Nkrumah will still remain great even if he didn't get a single honorary doctorate or he was not named African man of whatever.
There are many leaders who can also count a lot of medals and honours they received but these leaders were not great.
Let us concentrate on his actual deeds, not on his honours... Those of us old enough can remember the direct benefits we got from his policies, especially education wise. There are others too. This is what is important to us, not his honorary degrees.
We are a country too stuck on honours and big names and whatever...

Good one Gadd. I fully support your view.
Whilst taking note of the many accolades that Kwame Nkrumah received from around the world for his unparalleled historical accomplishments,I also think that we should concentrate more vigorously on his outstanding intellectual, material and socio-economic achievements - many of which have not been discerned or fully analyzed in terms of their historical significance, relevance and importance to world history.
By trying to castigate, undermine and shoot-down any act or deed that has not been approved by global imperialism or, any act or deed that has the potential to enhance the image and the living conditions of the African, proves that the African 'intellectual' is still generally stuck in the imperialist quagmire of abject subservience.
In the same way that one cannot claim to be democratic whilst being manifestly racist, it is on the other hand, also not possible to make claims as to being an intellectual or to being a mentally liberated African from the throes of imperialism, without the ability of recognizing the monumental achievements of Kwame Nkrumah towards the liberation of the African continent and all her children throughout the Diaspora.

Hello Friends,
Good day!
This essay was not put together by Mr. Henri Vallin. I (Francis Kwarteng) did.
I am surprised the usual insults have suddenly disappeared---because the men and women who like to impulsively 9habitually) insult columnists without offering cogent counterarguments, may have realized the autor was not their usual target, Francis Kwarteng.
I guess "Henri Vallin" appears and sounds too "whitish" for their kind of insults. What a shame! Oh, I know they will soon be here with their barrage of insults and hypertensive outbursts once they realize "Henri Vallin" should have, after all, been Francis Kwarteng!
Let me go back to my busy schedule!
Have a great weekend.
Thanks.

I was in secondary school from 1962 till his removal and witness the fear of saying something negative about Nkrumah. The sycophancy in praising him was like clapping in a communist country. Most schhols had been started by churches and demanded by chiefs before 1957: Prempeh, Opoku Ware, Yaa Asantewaa, St Monica, Konongo/ Odumasi, Kumasi Academy, All Cape coast school with exception of Ghana National and Mfantsiman were there before 1957. Accra Academy, Achimota, Presec, Odorgonno, Labone, Aburi girls, Pope John were all there before 1957. The chiefs demanded infrastrural improvement. The for education was therer before Nkrumah came in. The so called vision for United states of Africa was no vision- If you check Hansard he declare that he wanted a similar thing like the unite states of America. The didn't just forge together. Where was the vision. I want all Africa to be speaking one language!!! Its an utopia!! Everybody can wish that and its not a vision. He was a good speaker but power drunk. He named everything after himself whiles Gbedema, Kwaku Baako, Kojo Botsio and other CPP stalwarts were there. That was not visionary because you will be undermined if you eat all the cake

I have older siblings who were in secondary school starting 57, my family background is non CPP with valid grievances against the CPP government!! However your assertions are pure crap based on my family's recollections of the period 1951-66. Did good speaking create Tema harbor and township, opposition politicians including my parents were flocking to buy houses and plots in Tema!! How about Akosombo, Ajena bridge, Awudome Kaneshie, Labone, Tesano, Lartebiokorshie, Bubuashie!! Are you aware that Dansoman TeshieNungua were all on the drawing boards by 62? As for your execrable assertions on education it is down right laughable!! Labone might have been before 57, however it was built by the CPP government, Odorgonno got new facilities. It is a fact that Nkrumah and the CPP built literally hundreds of new secondary schools 1000s of primary and middle schools, dozens of teacher and nurse training colleges, built new facilities for existing institutions and put all teachers on the government payroll, not to mention hospital by the score, clinics and dispensaries by the hundreds, paved roads, airports etcetera etcetera ad infinitum.
In closing Nkrumah's office door was always open to personally receive the petitions and occasional lectures from my mother in behalf of my father an arch opposition figure who was domiciled at D block Nsawam Medium Security Prison for over 7 years!! When his properties were seized illegally, Dr Nkrumah made sure they were released. According to him " gari salt & water diet" was a myth!! I will quote him on OSAGYEFO: Dr Nkrumah was far ahead of us, he was a great thinker, organizer, a politician par excellence, a true man of the people and an effective leader with Ghana and Africa's paramount interest at heart!! Dr Nkrumah had many great and admirable qualities, his character defects few and relatively minor, he was generous, courageous, kind-hearted and far from vindictive! Dr Nkrumah was a true giant among men,the likes of which I and Africa will not see for many generations to our great detriment!! I could go on forever but let this suffice. BTW my father always referred to him as Dr Nkrumah excepting when he was in the company of his contemporaries who had known Osagyefo personally like him. These included both his collaborators and adversaries and they universally referred to him as Kwame, sometimes as Kasapreko because he always kept his promises!!
As an adult I have researched and studied Dr Nkrumah and Ghanaian political history 1946-66 and have independently confirmed my fathers conclusions and judgement of that era!!!

Mr nkets, so for you, it is not Utopian but it is alright for virtually all of Africa - the second most populated continent, to speak about 3 or 4 FOREIGN languages which were forced upon us by our oppressors but it is not alright for an African to envisage and propose a common language for all of Africa? Is it also Utopian that the UN has designated only about five or six languages - none of them from Africa, as the official languages for all of the roughly 193 member nations - the overwhelming numbers of whom speak other different languages?
If you are as old as you claim to be, I cannot but sympathize with you that having reached this advanced age and having failed to make proper use of the mental faculties that God in His own wisdom bequeathed upon you, you are nearing your maker yet, you still havent made use of Gods gift to you and you continue to live in complete darkness. How are you going to explain yourself on judgment day to your maker? This is a cardinal sin for which you will surely pay for for.
Are you aware that the United States of America who you make reference to, was the native land to tens of millions of indigenous people of various tribes and their various languages before those who mutilated your brain got to that country and forced their single foreign language on the barely remaining hundreds of thousands of the original natives who survived the genocidal massacre by your slave masters?
You sound like some of those idiotic Ghanaian clowns who in their utter and abstruse ignorance, close their eyes to the formation and existence of the Boys Scouts and Girl Guides Movements as well as Christian church organizations who all pay ultimate allegiance and homage to leaders in foreign imperialist countries, but, would not tolerate for one second, the principles of the formation by the state of Ghana, of the Young Pioneers Movement.
For some of you, your brains have been so mutilated that you cannot understand why a Blackman would want to show that he is as good or better than your colonial masters. For you it is a reckless endevour for a Blackman to even choose his own way of enhancing his circumstances. If it is not the way his oppressors do it, then it must be a bad way for which such a person will be labeled a dictator, a tyrant or a person who is power-drunk.
As you yourself have insinuated above, you cannot even begin to imagine why a Blackman would, in your vile estimation, want to reproduce a white mans idea as in the formation of the United States, in Africa. I sometimes shudder at what the experience is like, living in a dark distorted mind with no regard to his own self nor any sensitivity of any kind towards shame like yours.
Kwame Nkrumahs vision of a united Africa is, unlike any other, unprecedented and peculiar to itself and lies in the fact that he had the courage at the time when even the desire for national independence had sent many hundreds of thousands of Africans to their early graves by the swords, hang-ropes and guns of our oppressors, to dare beyond the confines of a limited independence to remove the numerous artificial borders to which Africans had been confined to like chicken in a hen-coop.
Even though many African leaders claim to be working hard at it, we do not yet know of any African leader since Kwame Nkrumah, who has dared to meaningfully act upon and to follow-up on this magnificent idea which remains the only option that has the potential to enable the African to fully utilize his own resources for a more rapid pace of development. That is principally what distinguishes Kwame Nkrumah as an outstanding visionary from others.
As for geo-political boundaries, they have been shifting for millions of years. That of the United States of America is not the only example. There have been many empires and civilizations that have assimilated vast surface areas of the world, and in all instances, it took extraordinary men of mettle like Kwame Nkrumah to take the extraordinary initiative. We must however recognize and acknowledge the fact that Kwame Nkrumah did not anticipate genocide, reckless exploitation of vulnerable peoples and extermination as others before him, had employed to achieve their ends. As a true African, he sought the difficult route of seeking the understanding and willful association of other African leaders towards this great vision.
I dare you to name and itemize the number of educational institutions that the Europeans established since the early 15th century when they landed on our shores up to 1957 when Kwame Nkrumah booted them out. After that, I would similarly like you to name and itemize the number of educational institutions that were established in the brief 9-year period of the 1st republic of Ghana when Kwame Nkrumah was the democratically elected leader of this once great country. When you have finished with that, I would oblige you to compare the visionary achievements of Kwame Nkrumah in the educational sector alone to that of any other leader of the world during that same period and tell us who you think was the most extraordinary leader at the time.
Finally, I would be most grateful if you can list what and what Kwame Nkrumah specifically named after himself - that is if you are honest enough to accept the challenge.

Excellent points, we must say, Shabi, GORGORDUTOR, Gadd, Gangu, Franco, All...!
We agree!
We also agree that the accolades, prizes, and awards, etc., were simply the effects of the monumental ideas and tangible/practical things Nkrumah achieved for Ghana, Africa, and the World.
Of importance, as Francis Kwarteng notes at the end of this essay, is the FACT that Nkrumah was a co-founder of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) of independent states.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ALL GHANAIAN AND AFRICAN "INTELLECTUAL(S)....(AND)...MENTALLY LIBERATED..." NOTE THAT FACT. THEY MUST TAKE IT STRONGLY IT TO HEART AND DIGEST IT!
THEN THEY MUST BALANCE THAT AGAINST THE HENRI VALLIN STATEMENT AT THE OPENING OF THE ESSAY!
ITEM: We believe that the Henri Vallin essay was the first piece ever written where Nkrumah's program for Ghana was truthfully characterized as "reformist welfare Social Democracy".
It is (Welfare Social Democracy), NOW, precisely the kind enjoyed all over "old" Europe, from the UK, to Germany, to Sweden, to France, etc., to Canada (and even the USA)!
"Social Democracy", that was precisely what the CPP program was, for Ghana, all rhetoric aside!
But, it had some African-centered international implications.
Obviously, "Non-Aligned" did not mean that Ghana would/could sit around unconcerned while racist regimes were plundering and bonding Africans to servitude on their own lands, from Rhodesia, to South Africa, to Angola.
'Nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been waiting and hoping that at least one of them would surface to at least neutralize the suspicion that, like a bull is drawn to a red flag, it is only your name that draws them into fits of anti-Nkrumaist frenzy on this platform.
As I have suggested before, one would rather wish to ignore the vulgar and uneducated effusions of this infantile anti-Nkrumaist cabal but the danger to that also is that innocent visitors to the subject on this platform may chance upon some of their unanswered gibberish and mistake that for fact.
In the same way that they keep vigil only just to throw mud and bile at anything written in favour of Nkrumah on this platform, we also should keep vigil not only to clean the mud that they throw at us and Nkrumah, but to keep on educating these our unfortunate brothers and sisters in a subtle way as to eventually - if possible, make them begin to see right from wrong and fact from fiction in all spheres of life.
We have discipline and nationalist commitment on our side whilst they have nothing except the bawdy aims and lifestyle of their Pied-Piper - their white slave-masters.
