And that was why Osagyefo chased out those chiefs and persons who agitated for independence from Ghana. In effect, there was no Union, hence this present government has acknowledged efforts being made by citizens of the area to break free from Ghana. Prof Mills himself acknowledged the inalienable right of the people to have their own independence, when he remarked at the castle that, if the Volta Region with the rest of those people leave Ghana, how was the NDC going to continue to have its 'World Bank' during elections. The Germans have confirmed the abundance of natural resources in the area, including, gold, crude oil, bauxite, iron ore, zinc, diamands, etc. That their children would ride Mercedes benx cars to school, and per capita income will be the envy of all. Prof Lungu, by consistently saying "British Western Togoland" you give the impression that there was also a British Eastern Togoland. There was none. The whole area was German Togoland. After the First World War, the area was divided as protectorates between the victorious powers - France and Britain. The British part, which was smaller, became known as the trans-Volta Togoland, not British Western Togoland. The other part is now the Republic of Togoland.

TVT was a British protectorate attached to the Gold Coast. Yes, Nkrumah fought, through fair and foul means, to have the TVT integrated into the Gold Coast before the latter became independent. The plebiscite was in March 1956 and formal integration was on December 3rd, 1956 - in time for independence three months later. It was a very important project for Nkrumah since he clearly saw the FARSIGHTED BENEFITS of the inclusion, many of which you mentioned in your article. Needless to say (to use Okoampa's favourite expression), he met with a lot of opposition mostly from the Togoland Congress party which didn't want to be part of the Gold Coast and vehemently fought the outcome of the 1956 plebiscite - to no avail.

The Matemeho people were sympathetic to the cause of the Togoland Congress even as the NLM was also agitating for a separation - a cause which had less credibility than that of the Togoland Congress which was, genuinely, not a British colony. It is said that Daquah's position was that if the TVT wanted independence, they should be given it. NB: Danquah was not matemeho - he was not from the Ashanti region. Note too that TVT comprised only half of Ewes and an equal number of Ewes were outside TVT in the Gold Coast proper and did not take part in the plebiscite.

Now to the Adomi bridge - one of the wonders of Ghana, a favourite postcard picture. It is really a beauty. The best sight is not even from the bridge itself. It is from the last town (Senchi) before the bridge travelling from Accra. The view from the other way is great too but not as equally wonderful. The bridge still remains one of the "pride projects" of the British engineering company that built it 60 years ago.

The bridge at Sogakofe, built much later on, is bigger and more modern and on a wider stretch of the river than the narrow Adomi Bridge. The Sogakofe bridge can now be said to be the true link between Ghana and Togo and the Adomi bridge and important link between southern and northern Ghana through the so-called Eastern corridor.

The bridge today is not only old, its capacity has been far exceeded. It is a wonder that it is being repaired/renovated at such huge cost. I can see that in Europe or North America, a new bridge will simply be built near it or at another place. But, perhaps the cost will be much more than the repair works being carried out today. Those works are taking a long time. Two small ferries today provide the 5-minute crossing but a lot of vehicles are held up for hours on either side during the day. If you want to make it quickly, reach there early in the morning. The abolo and oysters will also be fresh and hot then...

You're right, Lungu. Imagine what Ghana will be like today without the integration of TVT - a much smaller country with the Volta River just a boundary. Nkrumah's vision was great and selfless in this endeavour. Indeed, Nkrumah really wanted the entire former German colony (Togoland) to be one country with Ghana. But somewhere along the line, the cordial relationship between him and Sylvanus Olympio, the Ghana English speaking Togolese independence leader (product of the London School of Economics) became acrimonious.

The rest, as they say, is history...

We can only hope that the $13 million spent to reconstruct the Adomi Bridge during 2014-2015 will take that resource well past another 50 years, that, that was also a criteria when the contract for the loan facility was approved.

But like you, we are not engineers, although much of our professional work the last decade and half, has been in teams that frequently included engineers of all specialties, including Civil.

The NLM in ASANTENI Protectorate did not raise the MATEMEHO battle cry till 1956.
