Indisputably, there has been decades-long rivalry in NPP between the 'Asante-Akyem' factions for the leadership, direction and soul of the party. However, Nana Akufo-Addo, in his desperate bid to become President of Ghana, destroyed his own chances.

Didn't Nana Akufo-Addo stand against Mr J.A.Kufour during the NPP Flagbearership race in 1998? So why not Mr Alan Kyerematen's leadership challenge? Of course, Nana managed to beat Alan convincingly at the party primaries.

Nana Akufo-Addo must take responsibility for his own failures, actions and behaviour of some people he has surrounded himself. When the likes of Kennedy Agyapong make idiotic pronouncements which affect the party's electoral fortunes in mostly Non-Akan regions, how could one fault Kufour/Alan camp? Is it Kufour's fault that Nana Addo couldn't do better in largely non-Akan regions, and even failed to retain and capture some NPP strongholds?

The issue of party management. How could one blame Kufour for the NPP losing its discipline? Take a look at the current NPP crisis. Has Nana Akufo-Addo shown any exceptional leadership in uniting the 'factions' at the party's HQ?

Nana Akufo-Addo bears the ultimate responsibility for the political calamity that befallen the NPP. Nana Akufo-Addo's own failures have proved to be his undoing!

Afoko destabilising moves serves Kufuor interests. It can be agreed that on hindsight, this has not been a very good decision going by the tradition of the NPP party.
Two things it did was 1. it created the perception, the NPP was against it's members of Northern extraction and this was what triggered the statement President John Mahama made to the effect that, Northerners were tired of being Vice Presidents and it was time they also became Presidents. The Northern vote all swung to the NDC party and it has taken a bit of work for Dr. Bawumia to try and reverse this trend.
2. it again created the impression and further fueled the Ashanti hegemonic tendencies which has always been resisted by our brothers from the Volta region, and also led the Late President John Evans Atta Mills of blessed memory to talk about the great Ashanti project.
The results of these decisions taken by President Kufuor laid the groundwork for a very tough ascent to the Presidency by Akufo Addo, in that, traditionally even regions that favoured the NPP in the polls like the BA region, started to move in the direction of the NDC, and was reflected in the numbers, aside of the massive courting of the BA region by the NDC. It must be noted however, should the Alan K faction succeeded, that would have been the end of the NPP party.
Coming back to the issues, what could not be have been predicted this time around was the resistance by the party of the Alan K faction, using this disturbance or dis-equilibrium so created, as a platform to usher Akufo Addo out.
The NPP primary electorate got wiser in the interest of the party as a collective, leading to the isolation of the Alan K faction.
The comeback was the Afoko debacle staged by the Alan K faction which has incidentally because of it's violent nature, led to the loss of lives of NPP members further hurting the brand of the pro-Afoko/Alan k faction.
The takeaway from all this, is, the NPP party from all indications is moving to the center from the far-right hegemonic elements and that is now the mainstream.
Equilibrium is being established for equality and inclusiveness and clearly, that is the direction the NPP party is moving.
