Yes, Bawumia's PhD is very ordinary. Many Ghanaians have similar PhDs and from universities that are more prestigious than the one Bawumia went to.

Bawumia's appointment as Deputy Governor of BoG was a purely political one. He was even promoted over his seniors in the bank some of whom also have PhDs. That was why he had to leave the bank when NDC came to power. That's what happens with political appointments.

NPP is just using him to do their dirty work. They will never allow him to be the Presidential candidate of the party. When it comes to that, they'll find a way to drop him like an anchor into the sea.

It's only in Ghana that we keep on calling people Dr Dr Dr... Janet Yellen, the current chair of the Fed, the most powerful central bank in the world, received her Economics PhD from Yale in 1971!!! Yet how often do we hear her being called Dr. Yellen? Ben Bernanke, Greespan, former fed chairs, all have solid PhDs in economics and have published numerous academic papers in many prestigious journals. Yet how often do we hear them being referred to as Dr. this or Dr. that? Very rarely.

Mark Carney, the young man who is currently the Governor of the Bank of England, (the second oldest central bank in the world) has a PhD from Oxford. Yet how often do we hear him being called Dr Carney by the British press? Carney is two years younger than Bawumia and obtained his PhD earlier at a more prestigious university. Yet he goes by his ordinary name.

The oldest central bank in the world is that of Sweden (the bank that instituted the Prize in economics in memory of Alfred Nobel). The current governor of the bank, Stefan Ingves, obtained a PhD from the Stockholm School of Economics (the country's best institution in the field) in 1984. Yet nobody, absolutely nobody, calls him Dr Stefan Ingves!!!

The practice around the world is not to call central bank governors by their academic titles. They are often referred to as "Governor", or in the USA, chairman of...

Only in Ghana is this age-old convention flouted. We flout it not because we want to do something commendably unique but because of the bloated sense of importance we attach to PhD holders. Only in Ghana that you hear the Governor of the Bank of Ghana being referred to as Dr that and Bawumia as Dr Alhaji...

Yet their doctorate titles are puny set aside those of the governors of other far more important central banks of economies that are hundreds of times bigger than Ghana's.

Bawumia is riding the wave of the popularity of his famous father, Mumuni Bawumia. It was JA Kufuor who appointed him Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana in 2006, and the same Mr. Kufuor who interceded on his behalf and got him a job at African Development Bank when he lost the job at BoG. Otherwise, this dude could not get a job on his own merit.

My connections at BoG tells me that Bawumia got his first job as Economist through his father's influence, because there are many Ghanaian phds who have tried for years to get a foothold in our central bank but failed. My own colleague who has expressed deep desire to return to Ghana and work for the bank, and has tried everything humanly possible but without breakthrough.

As I have always maintained, the practice of presidential candidates going to the north to find a running mate is the most "stupidest" and most backward practice any civilized people could conceive. Already, we have the incompetent Mahama on our hands, and to think of the likelihood of Bawumia becoming President in the event of Akufo Addo success at the polls, especially given Akufo Addo's age and state of health, is mind boggling indeed.

E-zwich emanated from his brains, he helped AfDB, helped in restructuring of Zimbabwean economy etc. He is a great treasure for gh but we fail to realize it just because of politics. Upon occupying those positions what meaningful change has JM brought to north and GH @ large apart from enrichment of himself and family. God save GH.

Yes, I appreciate Dr. Bawumia's deep economic services to our dear nation extremely much.

My question is; if people are busily being suspended in the npp family for putting internal issues of the npp family in the public domain, then would it be so a palatable to take home and enjoy hearing and knowing that due to political ambition, even little misunderstanding, mistake, wrong doing etc seen by Dr. Bawumia become the restaurant plates where the whole world eat in and disgrace it?

Don't you think by bringing out to the whole world that Ghana's government is incompetent, corrupt etc. Will rather stop the nation from breathing and loose all external opportunities, investors, respect etc. Even the youth will fail to acquire proper opportunities abroad as their integrity would be severely questioned.

Don't you think Dr. Bawumia is also crossing the limit and must therefore be expunged from Ghana? As being used in the npp!

Am so ashame hearing my country government is dirty and incompetent from people who don't even own a car in this foreign country we are living in.
