In 2008,there was a big rush by both NPP and NDC to brand their parties after Obama after the 'black' guy shot to the apex of the US Democratic Party and all the euphoria pointed to an Obama victory. It is largely believed Obama's victory also propelled the NDC to victory in Ghana, in-fact there were some NDC bill boards with Obama's picture superimposed on Mahama's alongside that of Prof. Mills. It seems the NDC is the Democratic Party and NPP the Republican. Unfortunately in this year's election, the front liner in the Republican Party is not exactly what the NPP were hoping for. Donald Trump is the last person any NPP man would want to brand their party after. He would simply chase most undocumented 'aliens' from the US, majority of Ghanaians in the US don't have papers and NPP supporters are a big chunk. Donald Trump is railing against the Establishment, that is the traditional owners of his party, the ideologues, the elite, those entitled leaders in waiting, with a number in the succession line. This is what Donald Trump is fighting against. In Ghana, Nana Addo can be classified as an Establishment candidate of the NPP. He feels entitled, he feels he is next in line to take over. In this sense alone, Donald Trump would fire him. That type of politics in Donald Trump's view has not brought the US any good. This is the one and only positive thing characterizing his campaign, which is appealing to Independent voters. Nana Addo would be part of the problem if Trump were campaigning in Ghana. So it seems the NPP cannot draw a leaf from the frontliner of the US Republican party, because it stands for everything Trump is against. The Obama effect of 2008 is no more valid in Ghana, both Mahama and Nana Addo must define their own brands.
