A noteworthy article but unfortunately, item number 7 is a fallacy when it comes to USA. Accredited online PhD. degree holders are not considered inferior to traditional classroom PhD degree holders. They are equally qualified and can be hired to teach in the USA.

The US is not like Ghana which has one Accreditation Board. Universities in the US do not have to yield to hiring standards set by the Dept. of Education. If you need an example simply go online.

You have not answered my question. Yes, the US has many accreditation bodies but faculty in North America has similar entry requirements. Just mention one university an online degree holder is a faculty member.

I attended classes on campus (in a traditional classroom setting) with class population of not more than 17 students per class. My problem with you is your outright condemnation of a system that you either know nothing about or you are less knowledgeable of. If we had adopted Distance Education at the time that we were facing problems with enrollment at the time that we had only 3 Universities, we would not be this far behind. Unfortunately, we are making the same mistake with online education. Do you realize how people are fighting head over heels to earn Distance Education degrees from Leicester University in the UK? Why do we always have to be late comers? Correct the flaws if there are any, but don't condemn the system outright. And by the way I earned my M.Ed in Higher Education Administration from a reputable University in the USA. So you see, we are talking Higher Education Administration here.

All what you have said is true and more.Not only has it become fashionable to use the title Dr because this days, because it is cheap to buy the qualification not only from dude institutions, but from the mushroomed theological colleges with no accreditation and no campus.

Al pastors are now Drs even people with no secondary qualifications.The respected title Dr has now been dragged to the mire and the accreditation board must sit up to their responsibility.

Example is lawyer Ampaw who prefix his name with Dr then when you check his profile you see that it is coming from one of these private theological colleges with no accreditation.The deception is becoming too rampant to be overlooked.

From checking other profiles,I see that most of the teachers at the private universities have certificates from unrecognized institutions with no known campus.We must sit p or we destroy our educational system.

Let's protect our educational system from foreign charlatans who may take advantage of us. How should an institution which is not recognized in its own country be recognized in Ghana? Get serious!! Yes, some of them may have completed over two years but that does not make the SMC an accredited institution. Don't expose yourself.

Are online PhDs credible. I know many who have contracted people to write dissertations for them, and these online programs are particularly known for this.

PhDs should be done in residence. We can take diploma programmes online but not a PhD. PhD suppose to be a comprehensive degree and you can't achieve all that online.

A gentleman in one of Ghana’s public universities has just been awarded a professorial title. Here is his profile:

· He completed his Master’s Degree in Ghana in 2013 (Barely 2 and a half years ago).
· By 2014, he received a doctorate degree from an online (unaccredited) institution known as “Swiss Management Center” (SMC). Surprisingly, the SMC, which is not accredited in Switzerland, has been registered under Ghana Accreditation Board. And the individual who brought the “cancer” to Ghana is a member of the accreditation board.
· The SMC has a sister institute (partner-in-crime) in Nicaragua that automatically grants additional doctorate degrees, after receiving the SMC certificate, for a fee. All you need is the SMC certificate and a hard cash of about US$10,000.
· By 2015, the said individual had a second doctorate degree from Nicaragua.
· After publishing a couple of articles in “sakawa” online journals, peddled by faceless school dropouts from Nigeria, India, Pakistan, etc., the gentleman has suddenly been awarded a professorial title. By default, he can teach and supervise graduate level dissertations.
· A large number of SMC doctorate degree holders are teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses in Ghana…

Dr. Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor following the approval of the Governing Council of the University of Professional Studies, of his application for promotion from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor, and has also been confirmed substantive Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Professor Okoe Amartey joined the University a decade ago as a Lecturer in the Department of Marketing. He was among the first batch of faculty employed to augment the staff strength of the University when the degree programme was introduced.

A product of Aquinas Secondary School, and Prempeh College, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Sociology; Master of Business Administration in Marketing, and Master of Philosophy in Marketing, all from the University of Ghana.

He holds a professional marketing qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK. He also holds a Doctorate of Business Administration degree from SMC University, Switzerland, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration from the Central University of Nicaragua, Nicaragua. Professor Amartey has occupied other positions in the Department of Marketing, and the Faculty of Management. After successfully serving two terms as the Head of Department, he was appointed Dean and subsequently, the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

Reading through is clear there is mischief. Most universities in Ghana are only accredited by National accreditation without additional accreditation. I checked through SMCU and realized they even have other accreditation that many Ghanaian universities don't have. Maybe people are thinking online education means inferior education .

It is simple, an institution has no business applying for accreditation in Ghana when that institution has not been accredited in its own country. National Accreditation Board of Ghana lacks the capacity to accredit a foreign University when the University is not recognized in its own country. Online degrees may be ok but not PhD online. PhD is supposed to be a comprehensive academic degree. Let's protect our education system.

Their graduatess are working in US, Europe and Australia. The university has a team of lecturers and professors from US and Europe as part of their academic staff. I am a lecturer in a university in Cameroon but used to the the dean of the university European programmes who is based in Austria ie Prof Gerhard Berchtold.
