  This submission only focuses on under-age marriage of girls but that is not what gender equality is all about. Of course, it is wrong and criminal to force a girl to marry below the legal age. Gender equality is more than that. It a general recognition of the human rights of a female person. It is against the unfair practice of discriminating against girls in their choice of courses in schools and colleges; it is against domestic violence against women; it is against unequal remuneration of women at the work place (common in the "civilized" West); it is against the denial of women to engage in certain aspects of some jobs - the military, police and other jobs considered too dangerous for women; it is indeed a worrying that even in the 21st millennium countries, both rich and poor find it convenient to select only a few aspects of gender equality, especially those that are common in developing countries like Ghana. And what about those countries where boys of tender age provide sexual pleasure to the ruling classes?
