Both the minister for education and the GES have come out to say that the textbook in question is not one financed or even approved by the GES. It is a textbook that is independently published. However, the point remains, that the content must reflect the body and level of contemporary knowledge. The head contains the brain. According to Wikipedia, "The brain is located in the head, usually close to the primary sensory organs for such senses as vision, hearing, balance, taste, and smell. The brain is the most complex organ in a vertebrate's body. In a typical human, the cerebral cortex (the largest part) is estimated to contain 15–33 billion neurons, each connected by synapses to several thousand other neurons. "

Mr Baidoo, I've been following this Quarm controversy for some days now & I must say that I've landed on the side of Prof Quarm. Education has to be truthful & reflective of reality &, students will see hundreds of people everyday using their heads to carry things. Admittedly, it's not the prime function nor, an appropriate use of the head, but, nevertheless, it's used for carrying by millions in Africa. It's not being done out of ignorance, but, for reasons of practical necessity by the poorest people, not only in Africa, but, wherever excruciating poverty exists - you wouldn't see it in Europe, US, Russia etc etc. So, the real issue is poverty and, for me, it seems that critics of Quarm are more embarrassed by his claim than by the reality of people using their heads to carry stuff. So, tackle poverty & you'll tackle carry things on the head. Ambition & aspirations of our students is irrelevant - they wouldn't use their heads to carry, unless they're living in extreme poverty. Maybe Quarm should've clarified that the head is not best used for that purpose, but, people do so out of practical necessity.

Of course, you cannot tell six year olds the alternative use of the penis; it is inappropriate at their age. However, what drew my attention to this saga was the way his apologists tried to explain it away. Are they trying to contend that six year olds cannot comprehend the concept of thinking? What is so abstract about this that they need to reach the age of consciousness before they can grapple with it? Because I use the word constantly when I am having a conversation with my six year old and he understands. Besides, I always ask for his opinion, which he has to apply the abstract notion of thinking.
