  Can it be true that the NRC was kept abreast of Nkrumah's illness all along? If so, they didn't tell Ghanaians. Most Ghanaians didn't know that Nkrumah was even ill, let alone dying.

  It appears not all members of the Council were at first fully in agreement with bringing the body back. It's true the Guineans didn't want to release the body and different rumours were rife. As you rightly said, means of personal communication were scanty in those days and one had to wait for the major radio news (only GBC) to hear anything definitive.
  
  The death took most Ghanaians by surprise, no doubt about that.
  
  And, btw, the master-mind behind the 1972 coup was Major Baah, rather than Acheampong who announced the coup and headed the NRC.
  
  Anyway, Nkrumah got a tremendous "welcome" from Ghanaians when he was laid in state for a day at the State House. A memorable and sad day that was...

This is because the anger after Acheampongs school had not settled. Busia 2 years brought hope, freedom and excitement. It appeared only good because a neutral regime could allow Nkrumah back. I am antI Nkrumah. Don't overstate the mood of the times as it is blown up by ppeople today who were unborn in those days.

  Foolish man. No shock and sadness? Even my father a well known strong adversary of Osagyefo, jailed for over 7 years under the PDA was shocked and saddened by the news. The end of April 1972 was the first time I heard Dr Nkrumah referred to by the following ephitets: "Kasapreko" "OwuradeBasa etc. Amongst the real men who reffered to him thus are the following ancestors: Opanin Victor Owusu, Amega Senyo Gatro Antor, Ataa Nyemitei, Alhaji Yakubu Tali Tolon Naa and Douri Naa Diedong DemboThe Old Man paid his respects during the funeral and signed the condolence book. I was a small boy back then, even neighborhoods known to be anti CCP in Accra you could sense the sadness and regret. Please dont allow your political proclivities to lead you into easily disproved lies!!
  In closing I will paraphrase my Old Man: Dr Nkrumah was far ahead of us, his analysis of our condition and the path forward to the full emancipation of Africa was fundamentally correct. Ghana has gone backwards since 24 February 1966!!
