  Why shd 12 & 13 year old be subjected such to torture writing external exams at that age?It shd quickly be abolished and merge with the SHS exams,even the SHS shd be decentralized.Each region can write it own set exams.

  The WAEC predates another West African boondoggle, ECOWAS. Whereas WAEC was formed in 1952, ECOWAS came into being in 1975, and also whereas WAEC comprises of 5 members (The Gambia, Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leon) ECOWAS comprises of 15 countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leon, and Togo).
  
  So why am I contrasting WAEC with ECOWAS? WAEC is 64 years this year, and ECOWAS will be exactly 41 years on May 28. The question then becomes, what has our country (Ghana) benefited from these two west African organizations? Are these organizations meeting our development needs? Are our development needs the same as Sierra Leon, the Gambia, Liberia, and Nigeria? We may be in a consanguineous relations with our sisters and brothers in these other countries, but should our country compromise our educational standards with them? Why do we like to be like Sierra Leon, the Gambia, Liberia, or even Nigeria?
  
  Why does a country like Ghana with so much potential link its future with losers in the region? Are we just happy as a people to hang out with the Gambians, Liberians, Sierra Leoneans? It is impractical that after 64 years, our country with so much potential to be trapped in a west African boondoggle that has no relevance to our development needs. No wonder one generation after another in Ghana is bereft of cognition and common sense, just like our neigbours. Our universities are bedeviled by empty barrels from WASSCE graduates, yet our nation needs scientists, lawyers who can read and interpret the law, architects, medical practitioners, etc. There is not one country in the region that you can point to and say this country is an outlier in educational or economic achievement - we are all trudging along with no conviction of purpose.
  
  The least said about ECOWAS, the huge elephant in the room, the better. It is time to scrap these two west African boondoggles and chart our own destiny as a country. If I have my way, WAEC and ECOWAS will be history - these are two useless hindrances to our human and economic development.

  Minuah Yeboah, I disagree with your calling the ECOWAS members "... Losers in the region" . Some of them are doing better than us, politically, economically, and socially. And please don't leave Mali out of ECOWAS.

  ECOWAS is not a boondoggle. It is struggling with the integration of the subregion since its formation because we the people who comprise these West African nations have not put pressure on our governments to integrate the economy nor the transportation systems.
  We have not been successful in calling on our governments to even find a solution to deal with the nomadic Fulani herdsmen.
  
  We the people of West Africa have to make ECOWAS work for all of us. And please learn to spell Sierra Leone correctly.

  My bruda, you don't want to get into a discourse with me on ECOWAS because I know what I am talking about. I have been to their plenary meetings as an observer, and you have no idea of the politics in ECOWAS. Keep dreaming as you always do.
  
  If after 41 years ECOWAS is (in own words) struggling, then when will it grow up? The smart people of Mauritania left ECOWAS in 2000 because they saw no benefit in it.
  
  Now let's get to the meat of this
  discourse. What are the goals of ECOWAS, and which one have they achieved after 41 years? ECOWAS was created to promote economic trade among member nations - this was the preeminent goal. After 41 years since inception, can you tell me how trade exists among its members? ONLY 13%. These Africans prefer to ship their goods to their former colonial masters rather than their own. Where is the West African single common currency, the Eco? And where is West African Parliament? Oh, huh, the Court of Justice? What about the economic and social councils that were supposed facilitate integration.
  
  It is not funny, but sometimes I marvel at your level of thinking and how you process information. Here is the definition of boondoggle: work or activity that is wasteful or pointless but gives the appearance of having value.
  
  As a developing nation, we must choose our priorities - priorities in education is foremost, because nation building is not for dummies as is evident in many African countries. The priority of choosing our economic partners - partners to learn from and to study their progress. A nation cannot pin its hopes on WISHFUL THINKING!!!
  
  By the way, thank you for the correct spelling of Sierra Leone. I don't claim to know everything - I am still a student.
