  The majority of intellectuals have been the owes of their countries. Take Ghana, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq,Libya, Liberia, Serra Leone, Somalia, Yugoslavia and others are destroyed by some of their intellectuals who think that their colleagues in western Europe are better than them.

  A truly trained mind (an intellectual) is endowed with mental processes such as perception, thinking, and problem solving. Those who exhibit these qualities are the true intellectuals. Unfortunately, not all phds exhibit these qualities, even though education is all about perception, thinking and problem solving.
  
  You can judge the capacity of an intellectual by adroitness, but not necessarily by erudition and many Ghanaian intellectuals fit the latter.
  
  As I have always maintained, nation building is not for dummies. It is the scientist, economists, engineers, architects, and every other discipline in academia who shape the destiny of a nation. Intellectuals play a very crucial role in nation building, and it is the reason many nations invest heavily in education because it needs the lawyers, accountants, medics etc., and would not cede training the youth of the country to the private sector (the market place). Or if there should be private sector involvement in education, many governments ensure stringent guidelines to streamline private interest with the general good of the country.
  
  What we are finding in Ghana these days is proliferation of private mushroom schools without government oversight. There is no nationwide educational policy to guide the private sector, yet the country needs brains to sustain itself.
