Nana Akufo-Addo had promised to reintroduce the allowances for teachers and nurses under training. The was available for trainees during Kuffour's regime. So I wonder what makes things so unclear to warrant such a long essay? It's straight and simple; NPP will bring back allowances. Period!

Mr Victor Young I can bet my last cedi that The NPP will not reintroduced the allowances for teachers and nurses if ever they win power. They will come up with excuses. Afterall this is what they did after promising the abolishing Of VAT, reducing fuel prices etc but rather went ahead and increased those prices when they gained power. They are are a bunch of lying, deceitful and hypocritical conmen who must never be trusted. Ghana must grow, and we certainly have gone beyond the low income country status, so we are no more entitled to grants and concessionary loans as it used to be:thus we cannot continue on the path of freebies. It is not sustainable. The NPP must know that student numbers have increased tremendously, NHIS hospital attendance has has increased over ten fold since they were in power, and School Feeding has more than quadrupled. All these are now funded from Ghana government sources. With even a quarter of the current School Feeding numbers during their time, and funding by the Netherlands government, they messed things up with corruption to the extent that the funding was withdrawn in 2008. It's sad that some ignorant Ghanaians who don't seem to know the people we are dealing with. To those people, all I will say is that, ''beware of the hyenas in sheepskin''.

We have moved from Nokia 3310s and 3330s to Galaxy S7. We have moved from drinking pure water from the same cups to holding our own bottles now. Let's think about critical issues and take the bull by the horns. Who wouldn't love to enjoy everything for free under any government? But is that the way forward in developing this country for our future generations?

If all Teachers would get involved in this debate and share their opinions on this matter, we will see all the hidden sides of this debate. Do you think the beautiful things including the Internet on which you are posting this comment were achieved by the kind of stupidity your just poured out here? No, learn to read and spend time to digest issues critically. It will help you and help Ghana in the long run.

The pressing question is: why should a
teacher trainee spend his/her, now, student loan in
purchasing teaching-learning materials to tutor
students as part of his/her practicum, when he/
she will be paying the same loan back just as
other students in sociology, political science,
accounting, management, anthropology, classics,
religion, languages, biological sciences, chemistry,
etc., who do not have to expend their loans in
providing the necessary inputs for their training?
I wish to bring to your attention that students in other professions be it the universities or polytechnics used this same student loan to buy handouts which may not even cover all hand out cost, feed on it and even rely on it for attachments which is the equivalence of teaching practice. Yet when after completion one has to wait for more that two years before getting a job. But with the teacher trainees their job is secured. So why would trainees of non-teaching fields take students loan and teacher trainees take allowances? If the allowances are to be maintained, then the colleges should not be made Tertiary institutions. Students and authorities of these training colleges should have analyse the benefits of tertiary status for their students trainees and not just the tutors who forms the minority of the whole institution instead of trying to put the blame on politicians. The truth is politicians would use to their advantage, but the status quo will remain forever.

There are multitudes of individuals who benefitted from what the author is talking about in this article. I wish they could all care a little and share their experiences. Then we wont have the politicians dictating the pace. It will simply be what we call for as a nation, not what they decide to do using avenues that can help them steal money from us. Dr. Tsikata, kudos and keep up the good work

The allowance was given to motivate people to go to training colleges but now who needs to be motivated to go to school?
You make it seem like Poor people go to training colleges. We need some Prestige to be attached to training colleges too. Look at the number of people going to training colleges now and the government has to pay all that.
Or you think University students dont suffer? Come and look at how students sleep on floors and sleep by their friends because they cant pay fees.
I am a strong NPP fan but I agree with Mahama when it comes to allowances.
We do politics with everything in Ghana which is bad.
