Our people live in poverty and have the standard of a nation in the 17th century rather than enjoying the standards and benefits of the 21st century . Imagine Putin of Russia privatizing the oil and gold of his country and it being owned by non Russians , foreigners from Europe China or America . Imagine Britain , Norway or USA allowing their industry , natural resources or oil be owned by non citizens ? We are surprised we have fake exploiting investors who never bring their profits back but rather buttress their economies in their own countries with our money and wealth . Yes its time to end all these , find true thinkers and patriots who will truly love our people and put them first . Yes only war will remove this oligarchy who think the way forward is to keep our people in poverty. We challenge all sound minded people to review and reflect upon all political decisions of the last few decades and observe how they find ways of perversely undermining otherwise correct macroeconomic principles and rules into nightmares of worry and trouble for future generations. They sell our golden goose to foreigners and applaud each other in their stupidity of how they were able to sell out the interests of the ignorant people. Yes war will make them know the price of betrayal and selling out the nation's interest . Not a single decision has any common sense or is motivated by the true desire to serve the interests of the people . Today we see small boys driving around in expensive cars because they are pepeni /ayigbe hegemony tribalism saturated . Time to end all of this nonsense and this is the year , forget elections and prepare for war as they will only attempt again to rig the vote and will never be encouraged to go away peacefully . Charles Agbenu, whilst I do not dispute that all ethnic groups in Ghana look down upon others, I disagree with you that pepeni or pepe and ntafuo are derogatory. The word pepeni is from the Akan word periperini (from the word exact, truth or honesty) that had been contaminated into pepeni. Periperini means the honest one. When the Northerners came to the south to work they were so honest that the Akans referred to them as being periperi. That is, their word is their word, no was no and yes was yes. One could leave their valuables, money in the house and they would not touch it. That is the origin of the word.

Ntafuo is also from the Akan word ntaa (double or twins). That was also because they moved in at least twos. When you engaged one in your house, the next time, he came with a brother asking if you could assist him with a job. Therefore the ntafuo (the twins).

I wrote an article on this subject on Ghanaweb in 2011 and you can refer to it. I shared my childhood experience and how my late grandmother explained the two words to my sister and I. The title of the article is, "Is Pepeni still relevant in contemporary Ghanaian politics?", Ghanaweb September 4, 2011. You can read it for yourself.

One other confidential by controversial information our grandmother shared with us that I did not include in the article but I can now confidently share it (because I saw the Otmufuo himself confirm it in a video on the Kumawu chieftancy dispute I watched last night), was that we Akan Royals arranged for Northern men to have children with royal women whose children are likely to ascend onto the stool so that the male children (potential kings and chiefs) will bear the good qualities and characteristics of Norther men. (strong, tall, handsome, hard working, etc). They were "men" in the true sense of the word. In Akan word "mbema". So do not be surprised that most Akan kings and chiefs could be bearing genes of northerners.

It may be true that southerners may look down on northernes but I can tell you that we secretly admire them for the their qood characteristics of hard working, being bold, honest, etc.

Your article is too simplistic and the this subject is more complex than you make it look. I hope you did not do so deliberately for political expediency. That is dangerous and divisive and that is how the genocide in Rwanda occurred. We should avoid such narrow minded discussions of complex issues that could inflame ethnic conflict in Ghana.

Do you know that even in the three northern regions some ethnic groups also believe that they are superior to others? So is within the Akan group. In fact, there is inter as well as intra ethnic superiority. For example, among the Fantes, Agonas make fun of the Gomoas and vice versa.

If you do not have sufficient understanding of complex socio-political subject, please do not put simplistic interpretation to it because you end up causing more harm than good.

And the story is this: we called them pepenli(nzema) Because they're "p3lip3li" (nzema) p3ri-p3ri in twi. that is too much trustworthy which was an uncommon virtue, hard to find in any nzema/appolo...In those days too much of trustworthiness was considered foolishness (that was how we akans barbarically felt trustworthiness meant back in those days).

Therefore such people were only worthy of being stewards (that is it-nothing more). This has passed on from generation to generation despite being enlightened from our barbaric ways. Still people consider it a stint on northerners by calling them pepeni-twi or pepenli.

On ntafuo or nda-nli (nzema). Particularly in Nzema, it is flaunt upon for a man to always do something by being aided or helped by another person. Independence was then the virtue of a man (i.e when you do it all by yourself meant you're a Don). But our people now find themselves with this northerners always doing things by delegation-you help one of them another person come in to support or they always find someone else (possibly a relative) to come and receive the same help you offered as usually done by twins. This was considered a bad omen (of insecurity as you can't do without your brother).

During the first Nzema/Appolo civil war when the festish priest "Kenlamo Dabeda" was brought to nzema together with bunch of fellow northerners (i.e before the first Asante civil war) we did not intermarry with the northerners (because of those stupid reasons).
Now the asantes were wise, when the asante civil war broke out and seeing the success the northerners brought to the nzemas, not only did the asantes made them allies, they intermarried with them by providing even their best of females to the stout northerners men (despite the barbaric stint akans held against the northerner).
And that is what made asante kingdom as great as it is today: they become the masters of delegation through mating.

I experience it personally and I was also told before it happen were no northerner or stranger have to go outside, but must stay indoor till all rituals and sacrifices are well done. We all the farm produce without stealing not even a grain from the farm.

That is what Ewes have called Northerners since time immemorial because they come from a place that is hotter (dzobe) than Eweland. The term does not mean the Northerner is inferior. There is general prejudice tribes have of each other but the term "dzogbedzitor" is not expressive of that prejudice even if some Ewes may twist it at times. An Ewe married to a Northerner can proudly say he is married to a "dzogbedzitor" and nobody will say the term is negative. Ewe as a language never pluralize any word by adding the letter "S". This Gershie is a disgrace to his tribe because he is ashamed to identify with them. I am an ewe and proud to be. From my traveling around the country and living at Anloga in Kumasi and other places, I know ewes respect all people and themselves. We are more welcoming towards our fellow ewes and that is normal. Go outside Ghana and you will notice the black African is more welcoming towards his own. This becomes deeper when the person is from the same country and more so if they are of the same tribe. I am an ewe married to an Ashanti and I love and work in the Upper East Region. Here ewes click better with ewes and Ashantis with Ashantis.

You see just as the writer appears to earn from this write-up under the cover of an honest Ewe who sympathises with the Ashantis for their wrong tags, I can say confidently that about 90% of us commenting are blinded by some partisan and tribal sentiments. Some are hypocrites who never shall tell the truth. Take it or leave it, the northerners in question,who we want to tag as emotionally oppressed, are among themselves internally looked down on by some others. One post I read, by a northerner(as was cited in post) points clearly that Northerners in turn do not have that regard of superiority for Ashantis, or Akans in a broader spectrum. I know for sure other tribes do not have that regard for Akans , and many more. How then do other tribes call Ashantis, Brongs, Fantes, Akuapims, Akyems and Nzemas, altogether referred to as not having respect for other tribes? Sheer hypocrisy in display. Until we all are ready to take that spectacle of "where I come from" off, and take the tablet of universality, we never shall come to terms with this topic. Once, a friend of mine, a Fante told me that the northern tribes are tribalistic. How hypocritic, blinded by some prejudicial mindset. Aren't all other people tribalistic? The impression you preconceive about another, all because of maybe something done by someone of that origin is not enough for you to conclude that all others from that tribe are such. Shun hypocrisy. Just after you talked about equality, you came down and named our President His Excellency John DRAMANI MAHAMA as John Gibril Kanazoe Mahama. The question is how does the issue at stake amount to corruption? Is President Mahama the first and only Ghanaian President to receive a gift (car)? Ex President Kuffour received Mercedes Benz from comrade Gaddafi was he corrupt? Was he impeached? And where we're the so called impeachment lawyers? I have also head another idiot asking President to Apologize why didn't he asked President Kuffour to apologize or during president Kuffour's time I guess he was not a so called guru yet? U see young man this were the same things u people did to the late Hilla Liman and brought his government into disrepute to indicate his was not fit. And for former President Rawlings to save the situation called for retaking of the Presidency. Pls Charles learn ewe very well b4 u come out with this next time. Dzogbedzi means savana area. Tor means a native so when an ewe says Dzogbetor it simply mean a native of savana area.
First according to history,ewes only known the Brong Ahafo people as Akans. They call them Bonotorwo meaning the Bono people and bcos of the language barrier then they turn it to be "Blutorwo".
Mr. Charles does this also means ewes are insulting or using derogatory words agains them? No.

When you read these contributions one wonder why most of you are defending that the name given to northerners by ewes is not derogatory but means people from north or savanna region. But seem to see it wrong if an asanti call northerners ntafo or pepeni which is also not derogatory but it rather simplify honesty or walk in double. So the question is why politician especially from NDC camp captalise on this to deceive both the ewes and northerner to portray that whenever Asantes use the name ntafo or pepeni is derogatory or insulting ewes and non asantes. The issue is NDC as a party gains a lot for inflaming tribal sentiment in our body politics than any political party in the history of this country in that have managed to succumbed majority of non akans to believe this cheap political propanganda to their advantage. I think the reason is that majority of ghanaians do not read and again make decisions based on what they listern from the airwaves and rumour.
