All the rituals and the different kinds of offerings found in the bible especially in the book of Exodus and Leveticus are just like what our traditionalist do during their worship.

The writer is trying to trace the origin of the worship of what we now call God. He goes beyond the ambit of the Bible (where you, Kwabena, start and end) and beyond the three major monotheistic religions to trace something that is common in all worship - even in traditional african worship. He says that the source of it all (the beginning) must have conceived of the deity that was worshipped as black. Indeed, the whole thing may have even started from the source of the human race - Africa.

I don't see which part of this argument says that God is black (or white)!!! You can challenge his thesis but don't put words in his mouth. If you read the piece carefully, the writer does NOT even talk of whether there is a God or not, so how can he say that that God is black or white? He does not even say if God is spirit or not. He leaves all these things out and only tries to trace the historical emergence of worship as we see it today. It is on these grounds that you can criticize him if you are familiar with the relevant academic literature. The man is making a historical argument, not a theological one.

You are free to believe in the Bible and spiritual things but that is not at all what this article is about.

I urge you to read the script again, because that was the theme of the article, and was repeated many times.

Yes, the writer wrote those very words but you are giving a different meaning to them.

He is saying that in those ancient days, the people had to humanize the god they were worshipping and they conceived of it/him/her as a black deity. It is the conception of God that the writer says the people thought of as black, not God itself - not God as a spirit.

If God is a spirit, then it/He cannot have any colour. But the people had never seen or come in contact with that spirit God. But they needed a manifestation of that God to make it easier for them to worship and relate to him. It is that manifestation of the divinity that they cast as black. Not the spirit God itself. After all, they didn't know how he really looked like.

The theme of the article is that the people who started monotheism perceived of the divine, the deity, as black. This is in contrast to later day depictions of the divine in white terms. That is his argument.

By arguing that the writer is saying that those people thought God was black is to misunderstand him. He is saying only that they perceived God in black terms.

Again, I am saying the writer is making a historical argument, not a spiritual or theological one. The writer said absolutely nothing about what he (the writer) thinks is the true nature of the spiritual God. Apparently, he doesn't know himself - unlike you who think you know based on the Bible written long after the time writer is talking about.

Kwabena, remember that modern day believers do not need a physical manifestation of God. They accept him only as a spirit. But that was not the case 9000 years ago...
