In fact, I myself started started the application process for a training contract but withdrew to complete a PhD instead. And coming to developments these days whereby can become lawyers through certain routes, these routes were not there in the 70s. Think that many people now pay to get PhDs and hassan ayarigah has two already.

The claim made by Pro.Asare and which was effectively rebutted by Dr Borkor was that since Nana Addo claimed to have qualified as a lawyer at a time when you either need a law degree or a degree in any subject but required to go through the GDL course which he didn't there must be something wrong.
The gradute diploma in law covers the foundations of legal knowledge required for completion of the academic stage of training without that there must be something wrong with Akoffo's claim and that of Asare.
The evidence is that Akufo Addo did not go through the GDL which is the only route to qualify to become a lawyer without the law degree.
The difference between the law degree lawyer and the other degree lawyer is that the law degree lawyer can convert by doing a QLTT or qualified lawyers transfer certificate to practice in most common law jurisdiction.
On the other hand the non law degree holder is only limited to the jurisdiction in which he qualified as a lawyer and here again there is no evidence that Akufo went through the GDL route to qualify.
Ghana unlike the days when Prof. Asare mentioned some names who qualified as lawyers and rightly so, was what prevailed at the but not during Akkufo's time.
If you qualify without a law degree and want to practice in Ghana my understanding is that like the UK you are obliged to do the graduate diploma in law which is a different program just to enable you to do the legal practice course or the bar before enrolling on the lawyers course which is the makola program.
Again there is no evidence of that.the time Akufo claimed to have qualified,he should have gone through these processes which evidently he did not.I think these arguments must better be laid to rest since the harm has already been done if any.So prof. Asare and Adofo Rockson and co must stop defending the impossible.
A 2,2 degree either in law or any discipline is the prerequisite to gain admission to becoming a lawyer and here again Akufo is found wanting.

If indeed he had a law certificate that he says is missing, why can't he apply for a replacement from the Middle Temple where you claim he trained?
You've given examples of Ghanaians who didn't earn law degrees but were lawyers, having been trained at the Middle Temple. Was that still the practice during the time Akufo-Addo claimed to have earned his law certificate in the 1970s? And have you not read Prof. Bokor's article in which he made it clear that to gain admission to the Middle Temple to be trained as a lawyer, a candidate must have obtained a minimum of a Second Class, Upper Division, degree but that Akufo-Addo had a mere Third Class in Economics and was therefore not qualified for admission at that institution?
Finally, what aspects of Dr. Bokor's writings that identify him as being tribalistic? What about you yourself, Rockson and Okoampa-Ahoofe? You see, it's people like you, Rockson and Ahoofe who're Ghana's problems, because of your failure to support the right things. The actual practice in America is that anyone with a degree in any subject and with a cumulated grade point average of 2.5 and above is qualified to enter law school and after 3 years successful study pass out with an LLB. An LLB degree arms the holder to be called to the Bar as a lawyer. The logic behind the acceptance of degree holders in any discipline is that law as a discipline has so many braches.therefore someone with a degree in Medicine for example will make a good lawyer if he there after attend law school when the case borders on Medical/ surgical negligence for example. Conversely a first degree holder in Economics or Banking will be highly competent in Commercial Law. Back home Nana Addo's first degree in Economics makes him a Commercial Law expert irrespective of whether he had Third class or not as some ignoramuses keep peddling.good day

While today many are buying even BA and MA or MSC degrees, he really earned two at one of the best universities in America and in the world. His study of Black people in Philadelphia follows that Dr. W.E.B. Duois, even before his other books that freed the minds of Africans and the rest of the Black World. In 1942 he earned a BA (Theology) at the same Lincoln University in the USA and in 1943 earned an M.Sc. Education, MA Philosophy, and completed course work as well as preliminary examination for a Ph. D. degree at the University of Pennsylvania, USA.
From 1939 to 1945, Nkrumah combined his studies with part-time lectureship in Negro History. During this period, he helped to found the African Studies Association and the African Students Association of America and Canada.
He was voted the "Most Outstanding Professor-Of-The-Year by "The Lincolnian" in 1945 as a result of his hard work. In May the same year he arrived in London with the aim of studying Law and completing his thesis for a Doctorate but met George Padmore.
The two, as Co-Political Secretaries, helped to organise the Sixth Pan-African Congress in Manchester, England. He came back to the Gold Coast and became President of independent Ghana.
He was awarded the Ph.D. because he did the course work, passed the prelimary exams and wrote books, the equivalent of several dissertations.
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, indeed, truly earned his stripes and you should tip your hat off to him and even more so for what he did for Ghana, Africa and the Black World.

In the US, before you call yourself a lawyer, whether you came up through training or academic degrees, you need to pass the BAR examination. Only persons who have passed the BAR examination can be qualified to practise law.
Now, not everyone is allowed to become a candidate to sit for the BAR. if you go to law school in Ghana or Germany, you may have to take some courses in a law school in the US before you are allowed to sit for the BAR.
Now, there are lawyers that have MBA, or degrees in economics which make them attractive as corporate lawyers as work in corporate law offices pursuing among other contract law and corporate law.
"Common law" jurisdictions such as UK, the Commonwealth and the US have similar qualification criteria but with unique requirements per country, and in the US per state. Even in the UK, Scotland has requirements different from those of England and Wales..
But in all cases, law certificates are earned and NOT granted...

I'm perplexed that this writer is making the claim that people without law degrees are lawyers practicing law in international firms in America. In the United States, you can major and graduate with any undergraduate degree before going to Law School to get a JD in Law.
You could have an undergrad degree in Economics, but I assure an overwhelming majority of lawyers in reputable US firms have a JD, obtained from successfully completing law school. From there they still need to pass the Bar Exam to licensed to practice law in respective states.
