This is a good account of why the VR became tagged No 9. In fact, it is better than what's taught in even the undergraduate history lectures in our universities. I had met history graduates who claimed the lecturers never taught them not the whole of the VR formed the TVT and indeed, portions of same are now parts of the NR and U/R.

But, doesn't that make the VR the first region to be created, instead of BA? What about N/R and U/R being carved out of the then Northern Territories before the BA, and, perhaps, even before the creation of the VR or the same time? A little research should find out that.

Yes, I also thought the writer glossed over the formation of the regions at the time of independence. Looks like they were not called "regions" before independence. Perhaps that's why he said BA was the first region to be created after independence. Perhaps the VR was conceived of and put in place even before the first day of our independence. And then the Northern and Upper regions created from the Northern Territory may have been around the same time as the creation of the VR.

Let's hope some contributor in the know clarifies it all for us. It's an important and interesting digression.

Bunch of bull. Nkrumah created BA. No. 9 is a derogatory term coined for the ewes of the voltage region. That is why it never changes. But for the Ashanti they were brave people. Adu Boatene was the problem.

But in a competition like Miss Ghana, the numbers should be given to the participants randomly. How can the VR contestant always carry Nr 9? And no one has protested?

The coastal areas of the Volta Region consisting of Anloga, Keta, Aflao, Denu and going up to Peki, Tsibu, Awudome, etc. were never part of the German colony of Togoland but are, today, parts of the Volta Region. These areas had been part of the Gold Coast since about the 1850s. Further north, parts of the present day Northern and Upper East regions were part of the erstwhile TVT but are not, today, part of Volta Region."

It was the German parts that became TVT. The southern parts were never German and hence did not belong to TVT.

That voltarians like cat meat and with the number 9 tag already acquired through the beauty pageant, the humor gained roots.In Tamale we called the ewes "" kan chanwa" number 9.This means cat's head in hausa language.But like we say the northerners like snake meat,the Ashanti's cannot pronounce L and R properly, the Gas cannot pronounce H properly, let's all take it on a lighter note,DIFFERENT COLORS ONE PEOPLE, EWES ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF ALL LADIES IN GHANA.

Now there are no Eveready batteries in Ghana and the young ones will not appreciate the joke.

Places like Babator and Kpotor just south of the Black Volta river at Buipe were chopped off the northern region. The Dompoh people living in these areas are actually Gonjas who got separated from mainland Gonjaland after the carving out of the Brong-Ahafo region in 1958. I think it would also have been good to explain how Akosombo and Atimpoku happen to be in the Eastern region while near by Juapong is in the Volta region and many miles later you enter part of the Eastern region again before going to the Volta region.That said well done for educating us so well on the history of Ghana.

I've associated them everywhere I go and it's strange to know that they all have the same character. They say Voltarians are bad people but just leave your food in a room with an Ashanti man, come back 30mins later and see if that food will be there. Why do u eat my food if u think am dangerous? Just this semester, I have 2 Ashanti room mates, they're always insulting me and my brother that we're are dangerous and that we can kill them , yet they hid their food and consumed our own when it was finished, now they started cooking on their own. That is the Ashanti man for u! Hypocrites and cowards! The Volta presence will continue to haunt you for the rest your lives! And who told you Ashanti region is better than Volta region? Unless I didn't stay there before! Volta is the BEST PLACE in Ghana.

I also put. this same question to my Ewe Teacher in the early 70's and Miss Lucy told me it is because they were the number or 9th Region to he created by the government.

2. The Anlo enclaves created in Kumasi were for Anlos as the name suggests not for the people of TVT. The Anlos were all from Gold Coast, not from TVT. So the enclaves were not created because TVT became part of Ghana. Of course some TVT citizens went to the Gold Coast to work but most of them came back either before independence or just after.

Here is a more correct account of the formation of the regions:

At the eve of our independence the Gold Coast had four administrative regions: the Gold Coast colony (also known as the crown colony), Ashanti Protectorate, Northern Territory Protectorate and Trans-Volta Togoland. These four entities became Ghana on independence. Ashanti Protectorate became Ashanti Region; the Gold Coast colony was split into Eastern and Western Regions; Northern Territory protectorate and the northern parts of TVT became the Northern Region; the remaining parts of TVT plus Anlo and Tongu local council areas of the Gold Coast became Volta Region. On April 4th 1959, the Ashanti Region split into Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo Regions. On July 1, 1960, Northern Region split into Northern and Upper Regions. In 1970, Western Region split into Western and Central Regions. The merger of Sekondi and Takoradi to become a twin city happened in 1971.
