  Ghanaians like titles toooo much. Haba! Even if you've just enrolled yourself on a PhD programme you have to raise that to a status and give yourself some title!
  
  It is this our craze for raising ourselves that is making people rush for higher degrees from unrecognized, unaccredited universities.
  
  What loss is it to you if you don't write that you're PhD Candidate? Are you afraid that people will no longer read your articles? Or that your articles will no longer carry any weight?

This person is very ignorant and jealous. I have been reading a lot of Journals here in Australia and many people write, PhD LEARNER, PhD Candidate, or PhD learner. So what is your problem. That is the writers choice. He is not the only one using that in the world.

  Go to Ghana and see how people are using titles, both genuine and otherwise, to oppress and lord it over others! And the chattering masses are supposed to look on in awe!

  I look at the society you and I come from and I see a trend that I think is disturbing - our excessive respect for titles of all kinds and the academic in particular. Even Obinim is now Rev Dr Obinim.
  
  Dear Esi, you say others do it in other countries. But you know that we Ghanaians are fond of copying things from outside and distorting their use.
  
  And, as a matter of fact, most doctoral students do not write every little piece and proclaim themselves as "PhD Candidate" on that piece. I would understand it if it were a paper submitted to an academic journal. But isn't it a bit excessive on ghanaweb? What is really being advertised? For an article that is not even dealing with the area of speciality of the student.
  
  Yes, it is a choice, but what choice do YOU make.
