If you have an election where the choice is between two parties that are about the same, whose actual practices in government will be about the same, and which are made up mostly of self-seeking politicians, you cannot genuinely talk of it being about Ghana's future.

The future of Ghana will be basically the same under either of the two major parties. The real change will just be in which set of group gets the plum posts and lords it over us. Then there will be some cosmetic changes that are due to the particular government in power.

This election is not about Ghana's future. It is about the future prospects of the personal fortunes of the major actors on the political scene.

For a real change in the future prospects of Ghana, we should look beyond NDC and NPP. And there is nothing there either...

The man in the helm is a northerner, not by accident but by design so as to give northerners a palpable clout in Ghana's body politic. Ghana now has more northerners in government than anytime in our history, very many thanks to JD Mahama.

With a population of just 1.8 million, representing a paltry 9.6% of the total population of the country, the northern region can boast of two Presidents (Hilla Limann [1979-1981], and John Dramani Mahama 2012-), and one vice president, the late Aliu Mahama (2001-2009), to boot. These northerners held disproportionate power in Ghana's political history.

Very soon, we will have another northerner sneak into the Presidency through the backdoor by design, suppose Akufo-Addo wins the next elections and could not complete his term in office. Through a mindless politicking and offensive affirmative action gone awry, northerners are being handed palpable power on a silver plater, so what is the complaint about?

Are northerners cry babies who do not know have a clue how to handle power?

On the contrary, when the ignorant gang of Alolga Akatapore, Chris Atim,Zaya Yebo and Co helped Rawlings to overthrow Dr Hilla Limamn, JJ systematically eliminated all the prominent members and planted Ewes in the PNDC. Rawlings went further to kill prominent Northerners in the military and exiling a substantial number of them. The People Of the North should open their eyes and cease being used as instruments of means to an end.

The premise of this article based on the amorphous tag of "Northerners" as a single ethnic group is so flawed it negates the core arguments of the article. Mahama is a Gonja and the voting pattern there is the only credible results that could be used in an ethnic analysis.

Fact is, the several ethnic groups are so diverse in languages, culture, historical experiences, etc. that one can safely say many don't have anything in common with each other. During the era of the slave trade, the major ethnic groups subjected and raided extensively many of the current so-called minorities and sold them into slavery. This left serious historical cleavages.

Then in the late '70s, the major ethnic group managed to get the SMC to unculturally and untraditionally transfers the allodial rights to land, hitherto vested in the chief priests, to their Nabas. This heralded the beginning of the new conflicts in the North. There are therefore enough local cleavages to explain why the "Northerners" vote as they do; not necessarily the ethnic variable.
