  The two big parties have capitalized on the weaknesses of the educated northerners to politically exploit them. Rawlings side lined Alhaji Iddrisu Mahama who was Deputy Chairman and Secretary of Defence of the PNDC for umpteen years to select Prof Mills,an outsider as his Vice President, because he did not to be succeeded as preside by Alhaji. Similarly the NPP subjected Alhaji Aliu Mahama to a grand humiliation and emotional torture by denying him an automatic slot as presidential candidate after he served eight years under Kufuor as VP. They asked him him to compete with persons as low as MPs and presidential press secretaries,eventually abandoning him in disgrace. But I blame the northerners who are willing to play second fiddle to their southern counterparts. Perhaps cutting them the flak one might concede northerners simply don't have the wherewithal to successfully lead viable political parties and be their own bosses

  The NPP chooses its leaders democratically based on several qualities as the tribe of the contestants does not make the chosen one a good leader. Dr Busia led the UP party not because he is Bono but because of the qualities he had. Kuffour too led the party not because he is Asante. Akuffo Addo became a leader of the party through voting by the party members based on the qualities he has. Dr Bawumia has proved to the party and all Ghanaians that he has the qualities to lead the NPP in the future. On the contrary, the NDC party handpicked its leaders based on tribe and favouritism. This practice does not make the party truly democratic. The previous congress, the first of its kind, to democractically vote to choose between Attah Mills and Konadu was disastrous leading to the breakaway of Konadu to form NDP. The question is this, which tribe will the NDC party choose from to lead the party after Mahama is gone ?
