I must ask though, I was once told the tag was derived from a national goal keeper of old from the Volta Region who wore a number 9 shirt. Is there any truth in this? Anyway, thanks to the original poster of the article. More of these please. To all others. This work is this mans opinion informed by his research. Those days there was nothing like building up the game from behind and so who ever got a ball wanted to balloon it to the striker (no9) to score.
If you are not an Ewe , then you are definitely not a striker and so would not receive a pass from an Ewe person.
This is the origin of the tag No9 and not as the writer seeks to portray.
If you don't mind ask other tribes in the region. When you get into any office in the region, you are greeted in Ewe to determine the position you are playing.
You are treated any how if you cannot produce your no9 Jersey.
The truth is bitter but it cures

What a distortion of facts. The lower Volta Region has always been part of Ghana. In fact, that part of the region was part of Ghana before the Ashanti Region joined.
