Our poor education standards stems from the poor resources, from infrastructure to training of teachers and poor nutrition for students. China sends out millions of its citizens to the english speaking world to study english, and for what reason? You are not going to improve your standards on antiquated infrastructure,its simple.Many Asian students do much better in American and European institutions than their native hosts where the language of instruction is their second language,so why? Indian Americans have won the english based s spelling bee competition every year,though most students speak english only as second language.so what can we take from this?

The Chinese and the Koreans developed their own.It took a German to come to the Gold Coast, learn our own native tongue and write it for us. We have not even honoured him [Johanne Christaller] for his great contibution. Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador all have numerous native languages yet they have settled on the Language of their colonial masters for simplicity,ease and cohesion.
What use is my own native "TWI" to me with a vocabulary of less than 30.000 words? Ivory Coast gets by with French without all the bullshit! they have more than 50 different languages as well.

I realised the hopelessness of my own "Asante Twi" when I started travelling through West Africa. A person who speaks Sefwi, Wassa, Brong, Nzema or Ahanta will have no problem at all in having a conversation with a person who speaks Baule,sanwi or Agni in the Ivory Coast. Their languages are mutually intelligible.The same applies to Ewe. which is spoken in Togo,Benin and some parts of Nigeria. Asante/Akuapem/Fante Twi are only restricted within the shores of Ghana. Some of us will resist this "Nonsense on Stilts" at every angle. We will make sure Asante Twi is not imposed on anyone. It should be voluntary.Fullstop!

You can absorb foreign concepts into any language. You do not necessarily have to translate every word. In fact, English has absorbed lots of foreign concepts such as realpolitik, sangfroid, Kwashiorkor, juggernaut etc.

Speaking Twi will make Ghanaians more Ghanaian! Let us stop copying foreigners!

They adopted English as their medium of education and now they have beaten the English at their own language. They have produced literary giants such as Bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde etc.And the Scots, gave us Logie Baird,Graham Bell, Fleming and a host of other inventors. None of them would have been successful in Gaelic,Welsh or Irish. Just as Chinua Achebe or Ama Ata Aidoo would not have achieved global fame if they had written in Igbo or Fante. Twi is not a scientific Language. Get Real!

I had 3 children of almost the same ages read English passages for me. The child with the strongest command over her mother tongue was the most fluent in the reading exercise in English.
Having a strong command of one's mother tongue has a great influence on command over another language.

But, yes, it's good to encourage chn to learn their mother tongue and English. It's a bit tricky in Ghana, though, since English is not our mother tongue and we all speak it with different levels of proficiency. And with a "foreign" accent to boot!

I think it's not a matter of abandoning English completely but raising one local language to the same status as English. Even in Macedonia they use their own language. If democracy is about majority then nothing prevents us from settling on the Akan language. Talk about the opportunities and jobs the new official language will bring. Go to U.K. USA, Australia etc and understand the fact that our English isn't respected. Do we have to be that inferior? Shame on the architects of forging English on us.

WHY CAN WE NOT BE PROUD OF OUR OWN?

Prof Ppoku-Agyeman is merely saying that it would help our children to learn by using our local languages to teach them for their first three years. Thereafter English would be the medium of instruction. This is also intended to make them literate in our local languages.

There s a growing problem with the Ghanaian middle class who are bringing up their children to speak English only. The local language policy is also meant to redress this worrying trend.

The truth is that the majority of Ghanaians do not speak English. The imposition of English as official language is a historic aberration and denial of our people the right to participate fully in civic life. People deride Akua Donkor for being a presidential candidate just because she does not speak English and is thus seen as illiterate.

I think Prof Opoku-Agyeman does not go far enough. We need to use our local languages as medium of instruction throughout our education system. We can learn English as an international language.

We should replace English as our official language with one of our local languages, and ensure everyone is literate in their own language and the official language. Twi is a prime candidate for our official language as it is spoken by the majority of our people.

After the discovery of gas in the country, they realised that all the software in the industry are English based and there was no way they were going to be able to translate them into Swahili.

That former Minister is a total disgrace to academia, after supervising the worst period of decay of Ghana's once excellent education system! system
