It has long been widely suggested elsewhere that the approval of Books by the GES to be used in our Schools is plagued by shady backhand deals. It is all because of our general passivity to corruption in the country that has kept the practice around to this day.
So, it is very likely that the best of Books could be rejected while some others that are mediocre in substance and accuracy are approved. We surely need to defer to the lexicologists and technical experts in the various fields of study for the correct information to pass on to our children in school, if we are serious about getting our Citizens, especially, our young, well informed.
The word-replacement errors that the author mentioned are surely inexcusable for Books we intend to educate our students with. Yet, hardly do we ever see any errata to correct, or addenda to further elucidate, those errors in future editions of the Books.
Each Book on a Technical subject ought not be approved unless fully reviewed by Experts in that area. We may depend upon our Universities to provide such rich source of editing and proofreading.
While I share in the general frustration of the author of this rebuttal, however, I would like to humbly point out the liberties that are often allowed in local nomenclature of some of the stuff in his examples given.
On the nomenclature of the fruits he mentioned, I would like to point out that not every group in Ghana calls the Avocado as 'Paya'. Many others call it 'Pear', for lack of vernacular alphabet here to spell it in some of the common local languages. The name 'Paya' he used is only a phonological variation of the word 'Pear', and not necessarily a definitive distinct nomenclature for Avocado among all Ghanaians.
And the etymological reason, supposedly, why many of us have called Avocado as 'Pear' is how the Europeans described the Avocado to us in their language. They initially likened it to what they originally knew as their common Pear, (i.e: Pyrus communis) because of their similarity in shape and feel. In fact, many of us use the combo name Avocado Pear for Avocado in many instances.
Surely, Avocado is from a different family, Lauraceae, the similarity in its common appearance and feel to the Pyrus Pears caused its sharing of the name Pear. There is nothing seriously wrong with that. Folks only have to be educated that some other fruits exist elsewhere that are called Pear and look similar to Avocado Pear but taste a whole much more different.
Similar seeming confusion exists in Botany or biology all over. A particular case is what folks call 'Yam' in English all over the World.
Different species of Yams from different botanical families exist all around the World. Yet, no one picks up a fight over why others call them the same name, in various parts of the World.
The most important issue is to deepen the knowledge of our Students to let them know the reality of the existence of such different species sharing the same common name.
There are other species of the Pyrus Pear, all from the Rosaceae family, found in North Africa and Asia, as well, whose shape are more spherical. It is also worth-mentioning that not all Avocado Pears have the same striking tear-drop shape. Some variants are more rounded. The rugged ridges of the outer sheath of some of the Avocado species also has lent them the name 'Alligator Pear'. Yet, they remain Avocado in substance.
In fact, I have grown to hear many folks add the word 'Pear' to Avocado to distinguish it from the Pears of the Rosaceae family. So, it is not necessarily incorrect to call the Avocado as Pear, in our local parlance. But for purely scientific and botanical education, the distinctions must always be emphasized.
We cannot blame folks for using the word 'Alasa' as a local vernacular for the fruit of Chrysophillum albidum, while many others use the word 'Akasa' for the same fruit. We only have to emphasize that both names refer to the same fruit.
We have so much general Education in Ghana for far too long, with little specialization and in-depth study of most things around us. We tend to gloss over many issues, and lazily dump a whole lot of loosely-to-unrelated stuff together. And in doing so, we lose much vital information we could have obtained and used to our advantage and benefit with greater precision.
It all points to our Educational goals, and how serious we are in harnessing our originality for further and faster advancement.
Long Live Ghana!!!
