In the first place, John Amewu is not an Anlo man. His father is from Hohoe and his mother is from a nearby village that virtually sits on the border with Togo. The vehicular road from Ghana to that village passes through Togo territory. It is a village in the mountains with such beautiful cold weather that mosquitoes have a hard time breeding there.

Secondly, Amewu was a member of NDC. He joined NPP only because he saw his prospects in NDC were not bright since there were so many heavyweights in the party in his constituency. But the NPP top in the constituency and the region was wide open and empty. It was a boon for any Ewe who went there. That was why Amewu joined NPP. It was not for any ideological reasons.

He stood for mp on NPP ticket in the first term of K4. Of course nobody in Hohoe was going to vote for an NPP candidate. He lost very heavily. But K4 won and NPP rewarded Amewu by making him Hohoe DCE. Many people saw him as extremely arrogant.

When Mills came to power, Amewu lost his DCE job to an NDC appointee. But he kept faith with the NPP. He couldn't do otherwise. In the meantime, he went to Scotland to do some short-term (6 months) course in something connected with energy management. He knows Ghanaians value paper qualifications and he wanted to position himself for any eventuality and bided his time.

He became VR NPP capo. The competition for NPP posts in the VR is not as cut throat as that for the overcrowded NDC posts.

Amewu's wait for a place in the sun has come to an end. He could never win an elective post on an NPP ticket in the VR. But he could "win" an appointed office if his party came to power. I heard he specifically requested the ministry of lands. (He did BT in UST). He knew he would get that ministry, once he was not asking for the Finance or Foreign Affairs ministries. These would go to more favored members of the "right" tribe. In his bid to form a tribally inclusive government, Akufo-Addo will be looking to include some Ewes. His choices in this endeavor are limited. The jobs will go not to those Ewes who may be most competent by some objective measures, but to those who have remained loyal to the party in the region. And Amewu stands tall in this small group of dedicated Ewe members of NPP. The other ministerial post to an Ewe is to relatively obscure ministry perhaps purposefully created to include one of the "minority" tribes - Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious affairs.

This is the bane of our tribally based party politics.

The people in Amewu's constituency know he is going to raise his arrogance barometer a few notches higher than before. He has no big support in the constituency from which he comes. But blood is thick, no matter which way it flows. Some members of his family were around to support him and give him encouragement in the vetting process. They also brought along a borborbor group to celebrate his "victory".

We have various Ewe dialectical groups stretching from Badagry in Lagos State of Nigeria to areas west of the Volta river. We are Ewes; nothing, but Ewes. Our concentration is in German Togoland,which has been divided into French Togoland and British Togoland. The former is the present Republic of Togo. The Ewes in Western Togoland were forced to become citizens of Ghana. No one votes to become a citizen of another country!!!

I however disagree with you that, JJ may not have called Amewu. Well I believe that the founder who wanted and did everything for his party to lose power, called Amewu. I believed Amewu when he said that " JJ called him" and therefore see his later retraction and apology as fake
