This is a case of a pot saying to the kettle that he is black. Who is more tribalist than ewes in the likes of Kofi Awoornoor? Osafo Marfo was right in saying that one do not neglect the majority folks that produce the greatest wealth for the nation and that it is not done anywhere the world over. Go to rural communities in Ashanti, Western, Eastern and Brong Ahafo Regions and the reality stares at you in the face. Poverty is endermic in these areas and yet Mahama's government turned a blind eye to this. Education facilities and social amenities in these areas nothing to write home about. Look at neglected Asamankese road which leads to Osafo Marfo's village and is he not right in pointing this out. If the people of Volta Region wants to secede they can go in peace. Always you guys are attention seekers but the majority cannot be fooled forever.

Check this out: "I have reached my conclusion a long time ago that ignorant fools and morons, as well as being "thieves and thiefettes," have been misruling Ghanaians". How original! This quote is succinctly stated but the unfortunate development, thus the irony, is that it took a classified buffoon, in the person Andy K, an ardent supporter of these Atinga-Trokosi pack who has been looting and bilking the nation dry for some 27 of the near 60 years post independent Ghana, to make this beautiful observation.
I wouldn't have wasted my time to read from a hater like this Trokosi idiot but the mouth wetting caption lured me to do so. I cannot imagine how beautiful the Ghana map above would be if that portion with deep yellow colorization is wiped out of the map for good.
By the way how many tons of cocoa is produced from Trokosiland? And the mere fact that cocoa is grown in Trokosiland does not mean the owners of the farms are Trokosis. It is on record that most of the big time cocoa farmers in BA and Western regions, where a3 big chunk of our cocoa bean come from, are my half Asante Kookoase cousins.
Trokosis that we know in Ghana ply their trade far from farming. Their major enterprise is coup plotting. Kotoka, a Trokosi , was the one who led Afrifa and Co to topple Kwame Nkumah dictatorship regime, not forgetting the Trokosi serial coupist, Jato Rawlings. Another ungodly enterprise where Trokosis have gain notoriety for is " loot and share" which saw Tsatsu, Abudakpi, Solomey and others in jail. Daavi Ativor and Woyome are in line to follow the trend.
And did I read you well, that the loot of Woyome, the equivalent 27 or so million dollars as at the time of the heist, is paltry? May the gods of the Trokosi shrines forgive you. You need to go to jail for this stupid thinking. By the way, you made a very good obervation but it is ironic it took a classified buffoon of your ilk, who has no moral right to remind us about the damage your forebears has done to Maame Ghana. Ofui!

Many of them do not understand what Unitary Ghana values actually require, or mean. And unlike Andy, many of them do not even know the history of Ghana, or care to know.
Those are the same people who will talk about $35K cars taken be departing members of a political party, but do not have time support the multi-billion dollar petition for more oil revenues for Ghana. They allow themeselves to be used by politicians, while many of them wait overseas for their chance to "join the government", after their expected "jackpot".
Being a Ghana national simply is not enough. What we read from some of the members of these "Ghana forums" do not inspire.
We've not looked into this matter of cocoa and how much government pays.
What we know is, it is idiocy to complain if you are the farmer and are indeed receiving "70 cents on a dollar and cash in on world market prices."
This is the government that buys and transports.
This is the government that takes so much risk to guarantee 70 cents on the dollar.
This is the government that provides several services, including pesticides.
This is the government that does not charge marketing fees.
Ask for improvements in public services, infrastructure, governance, etc.

Been preoccupied whole day and so seeing this now.
Thanks for bring out the real title I intended for this piece. It is not about VR secession but some issues its discussion threw out. As we'd recollect, it was greeted by the ethnocentric wolves with good riddance! good riddance!
Nana Yaw isn't the only person ignorant of the data on cocoa. As I wrote, one can even get 1 in Georgraphy without knowing some basic facts about cocoa production in Ghana. And one of that is that it is also produced in the VR. Over teh decades, those of us had heard tons of insulting things emanating from this ignorance. Take for instance, when in Lower Sixth at Mawuli School, we had a mate, a Ga from a very prominent Ga family who came from Wesley Grammar. He found out that some trees growing behind one of the dormitries, Aku House, were some old cocoa trees and he was surprised. He hadn't seen cocoa before. It led to conversation about growing cocoa in the VR. From what he learned in the dormitory, he wondered why anytime the CMB scholarships were awarded at Wesley, the Akan students who didn't get any went on making so much deprecating remarks about [Ewe] students from the VR who also got the scholarships. Little did they know that Ewes are major cocoa growers in the north of the VR, and not only farm labourers on others farms. I bet some of those Ewes, wards of the Ewe elite, born and bred in Accra, didn't know either.
The ignorance is pervasive and complete, cuttng across board!
After posting my piece on Okyeame, Prof. Atsu Amegashie posted a link to an article on current cocoa production in which it was mentioned that the W/R no waccounts for 50% output. One person was honest enough to admit that
he was still under the impression that the Ash/R was the leading producer of cocoa in Ghana, a position it took from the E/R a long time ago and lost to the BA decades ago; before the BA also lost it to the W/R! But when cocoa production is mentioned, one is left with the impression that the Ash/R is still the lead producer.
Of course, many Asantes had become migrant farmers in the BA and W/R too. I was personally driven from Nyinahin to Bibiani to visit a branch of the Amanano Rural Bank there, otensibly established to cater for them, the manager told me when I queried such a breach in the tenets guiding the established of the RBs.
There is so much nonsense we have to deal with.

You twerp prefixing your moniker with "Dr"; don't you know that I earned my TK titleship justly and fairly?
let me recall an incidence at the Obuasi Station of Kejetia Lorry Park in early 1993 when I dressed down some bookers. One of them called me too known. I thanked him profusely for recognising that I know something in the midst of the ignoramuses populating the country and gave him 500 old cedis to buy Cola Cola. Come see, the next thing I heard was "Master, where be my own?" They became wiser that day.
You're too stupid to learn from the statistics I produced, which shows that cocoa is not a major contributor to Ghana's overall GDP as the hype goes. And it gets almost all the state resources (Prof. Lungu listed some) devoted to promoting agric to the detriment of other sectors, especially food production. If Northerners are getting 1/100 of the support lavished on cocoa, yams, cassava, peanuts, shea butter, maize, to name a few, would have been far leading earner of foreign exchange for Ghana than cocoa!
Already Puna yam from Ghana is the king of yams in all the African and Asian shops abroad. Soon, the Chinese would come to grab that opportunity.
Btw, do you know that the Ash/R lost its leading role as cocoa producer to the BA decades ago and that lead has now been assumed by the WR?
And do you know that the ER was the first leading producer?
And do you know that migrant farmers produce 75% of cocoa in Ghana, and when the Ash/R was the leader, migrants from other regions were the main farmers and Asantes were mostly just land lords on the basis of mainly abusa and abunnu, feeding off the sweat of migrant farmers and labourers? Who are the leeches then? Those slaving or the slave masters?
I don't brag. I simply tell it as it is!

It seems you equate literacy coverage of a tribe with their presence in the civil service and the political space. I suppose getting employed in the civil service is your ultimate in life but some of us think differently. That does not make you more literate. It is rather a lazy approach to life in my humble opinion. I suggest you go back and do some basic analysis before you advertise your ignorance here.

I'd be first to say no Ewe sets out to outsmart Akans in particular. Among themselves, they compete to be the best and work for others' like the work belongs to their fathers. Fierce competition to succeed and excel were core values instilled in Ewes by parents with ambitions for their children. Education is highly prioritised due to lack of natural resources like land, forests, minerals to exploit, especially among the southern Ewes.
Now, which Ewes were VCs during JJ's tim ein office? Not a single one! Even Prof. Agbodeka who should have become VC at Cape Vars was bypassed cos the chiefs ane elite of Cape Vars lobbied for a native from the C/R.
I bet you also think Akilagpa Sawyerr is an Ewe, just as Prof Adu Boahen said in his British Council lecture.
JJ was a disaster to the VR's devt and careers of many Ewes, so don't insult our sensitivities that he did something good to enhance us. The statistics are there.

Will such tribal idiocy ever end in Ghana? The core of the current caustic agitations for Volta Region's secession from Ghana lies in the simple issue of intractable poverty of many ordinary Ghanaians.
While the poor are getting poorer, even with higher and broader Educational exploits, the few well-connected Politicians and their cronies have been getting richer exponentially, widening the gap between themselves and the poor.
Our Schools are profusely producing graduates each year but the Economy sees no improvement to adequately accommodate these new seekers of employment. Meanwhile, people's access to the land for farming which used to be the last resort to survive economically in Ghana, has been constricting at a rapid pace.
We are then left with fewer choices and opportunities to earn a living and succeed in life at home. It is no wonder that some of the same political con artistes would like to blame immigrant retail Business-folks for our plight, attempting to detract from the real issue at stake.
When people hear of the massive financial windfall others at the top keep making from our collective national assets, either legally or otherwise, but, in fact, mostly under dubious circumstances, they feel deliberately sidelined and used.
This, in a gist, captures the plight of all the ordinary folks across Regional boundaries. It doesn't really matter who becomes the next President and where he or she comes from in the Nation.
After all, focusing on the aggrieved Voltarians, their own son, J. J. Rawlings was the longest serving Head of State in Ghana, lasting for over 19 years in total. Why wouldn't they ask how much he could help his Region to prosper in those years?
Rawlings alone was presented in secret a gift of Millions of dollars by General Abacha of Nigeria's nightmare that he kept to himself and wouldn't disclose until the Nigerians eventually revealed the fact. How much of that money did J. J. invest in the Volta Region to fuel the employment machine in the Region?
Similarly, many of us have been troubled by the emergence of the EO-Group from our Oil Economy that the partners had their company registered offshore to allow their revenue be stashed out of the reach of Ghanaians even as a source of recycled investment to bolster our employment situation and improve the Economy. The two partners of the EO-Group happen to be Ashantis, and very close friends of the then President Kufuor, under whose supervision the EO-Group-Kosmos Oil deal was signed. Yet, I bet my bottom dollar, that hardly 1% of ordinary Ashantis even know of the EO-Group, let alone receiving any benefit from the company's gains.
Until just recently, Ashanti Region had not seen a dime of any invested capital from the EO-Group's windfall in their Oil deal. Even as we speak, now, there has only been a stipend charitable contribution from the Group for Educational purposes that only a few Ashantis would benefit from.
We also know of the virtual sale of the Obuasi Gold Mine back to our former Colonial masters via private Enterprise-- to a British company in South Africa. Many believe it was because of that deal the British Monarchy honored the Ghanaian Executive, Sam Jonah, who pushed the deal through, with a knighthood.
Mr. Jonah, after getting his nice little commission from the successful deal, was able to migrate to South Africa to start his Venture Capitalist firm which I doubt has ever financed any native Ghanaian Business up till now.
We may be able to go on and on citing examples upon examples of how our leaders from our own backyards have cruelly, insensitively and selfishly taken advantage of our Nation's collective opportunities to enrich only themselves and done little to nothing to invest their gains back into the societies they come from to help the ordinary folks.
Then, again, the various Governments that have been in power allowed corruption among their rank and file of officials go rampant, diverting the little funds available for infrastructural development away from the people into their dirty private pockets.
Why wouldn't folks then be irritated, and in the Volta Region, in particular, regret having joined the former Gold Coastians to form our current Nation of Ghana? Only the ignorant does not know the Volta Region has also been producing Cocoa since the introduction of the Crop into our Land. But that is really not the issue. The issue has always been the perception of inadequate benefits the people get back from the Governments from their natural Assets and contributions taxes and exports.
I would assure the Volta Group that the feelings of frustration and anguish are not unique to only their folks. They are shared among all other Ghanaians who have been cheated by our selfish leaders from across the Nation, including some of their own sons and daughters who have had the chance to lead us.
The Voltarians must not forget that the very first most prominent incident of corruption in Government involved their sons, Komla Agbeli Gbedemah and Harley, Ghana's Finance Minister and IGP respectively in our first Republic. It was that incident that partly eventually led to the overthrow of Nkrumah's Government. And Ghana has since not been the same diversity-cherishing Nation with unified sense of purpose.
So, it is wrong to predicate secession of the Volta Region on the perceived monopoly of wealth by any other tribes in the Nation. So, also is it wrong for the Osafo Marfos to be insinuating that only non-resourceful non-Akans have been siphoning our wealth to their areas and private pockets at the expense of Akans. Balderdash!
I hope Andy and his other sympathizers of Volta Region secession would be bold enough to discard the false premise for those destructive agenda.
Ghanaians of all tribal roots have been made victims of the colossal relentless insensitive looting by our political leaders of all ethnic backgrounds over the years. And we must all bind together to diffuse the current tribal tensions and zone in on the few who have made our lives miserable.
Long Live Ghana!!!

G. K. Berko, in the first place, I don't think Andy is advocating for the secession of the Volta Region. He does not even come from the part of the VR that calls itself Volta Group. He is an Anlo man from an area which has always been part of the Gold Coast long even before the Ashanti state became part of the Gold Coast colony and also before the Northern Protectorates came under the protection of the British. So Andy is not calling for the secession of the Volta Region. He has no grounds to do that. And I believe he does not think it is a solution to any problem. Perhaps this may come out better in the continuing parts of his article series.
Secondly, I think it is only a small group of people who are calling for the secession of the VR and they base their claims on the fact that a large part of VR was not part of the British colony but a protectorate that was absorbed into the Gold Coast through means they think is unjust. This group is really not claiming economic abandonment as the reason for their call for secession. After all, they know that it is not only the VR that is underdeveloped in the region. So their agitation is really not an economic thing. Know too that many people in the VR do not really want to secede. Go there and ask them and they don't know anything about secession.
I think Andy's real concern is about the issue of tribalism tout court. He is more concerned about the anti-Ewe sentiments being expressed by people who should know better than to adopt such tactics. These people, chief among them Osafo Marfo and many in his cohort, justify their anti-Ewe sentiments by saying the VR (which alone contains all Ewes in Ghana) does not contribute much to the economy of the nation. They say this purely on tribalistic grounds forgetting the fact that the region contains lots of other tribes including Akans who, incidentally, live in parts of the region that grow a lot of cocoa and other foodstuffs. Some of the cocoa growers in these northern parts of the VR are Andy's own tribesmen (Anlos) who moved there to become cocoa farmers and successful ones at that even though their natural tendency is to fishing since they are coastal people.
Osafo Marfo should be apologizing for his utterances not try to justify it by some "clever" methods. An old man like him (he is 75) should not be saying things that will be picked up by younger ones who don't know any better.
Let's see how Andy develops his argument further. But he should desist from insulting others too. Not all Akans or Asantes think like Osafo Marfo. Not all of them will say things like "yen akanfuo". This is a point Andy himself has made on these pages before.

Kweku, thank you very much! I stand corrected. I was alarmed by some sections of Andy's piece. His likely irony might have been lost on me.
Meanwhile, I have often found a common driver to those rantings of bigotry encountered in the Media as emanating from economic disparities or perceived thereof among the different ethnic or tribal areas.
I also recognize how our parochial minded politicians despicably coyly defer to tribal differences to draw out support for their elections and other actions.
So, I would ask Andy to forgive me if my response seems to indict him. I am only trying to remind us all of our better selves that must prevail.
Oh, by the way, I could not wait but rush to send a more expressive piece to the Ghanaweb and Modernghana for publication, in attempt to diffuse the tension. Luckily, I did not single Andy out for 'persecution'. I dwelt on the economic angle to explain why folks all over the country could become frustrated and anguished to resort to tribalism, and the like, with the immutable poverty drowning so many of us.
Thanks, again! God bless you!
We must work harder together for the collective soul of the country, despite the setbacks.

Yes, I agree with your thesis that economic difficulties can make some people adopt certain underhand methods (tribalism) to express their frustrations and our politicians have fed fat on this phenomenon.
But, G.K., you know that this tribalism thing has been with us for a long time even when economic differences and difficulties were not as sharp as they are now. Nkrumah foresaw this even before our independence. That was a time we were all rich or poor together - more or less.
Yes, "we must all work harder together for the collective soul of our country". This is a task that devolves more on the people leading us today. That is why they shouldn't be making reckless statements. It doesn't matter what which tribe or which part of the country contributes what to the national wealth. We are a small country that can develop the entire country to the benefit of us all.
As for the comments on ghanaweb, well, what can one say?

G.K,
Thanks for your long rejoinder. I've just broached the top of long simmering issues. We can't hide from discussing them publicly any longer.
Now, you read me wrongly and so classified me among those who sympathise with any secession plans. I even wrote that I managed to silence one of the key secession campaigners on the CEANA and Eweland forums through force of argument. As a pro-Nkrumahist and ardent Pan-Africanist, I am opposed to any further balkanisation of Africa.
Having said that, it doesn't mean that we can ignore the issues that are driving the pro-secessionists. One of that is the obnoxious bigotry and prejudices expressed by some uneducated or miseducated and ignorant Akans against long suffering Ewes in particular. I intend to go to the root of the malaise. In fact, I had already done that years ago. Time to publish and abridged version.

When I posted the piece on Okyeame after it was published on modernghana.com, Prof Atsu Amegashie sent more data on cocoa production. Many were surprised to learn that the WR now accounts for 50% of cocoa outpout, still under the impression that the Ash/R is still the lead producer, as if we were still in the '40s, '50s and '60s. But the issue goes beyond cocoa production.
I touched on many issues and asked many questions which if answered, will blow the logic of the Osafo Marfos into smithereens.

We're quick to condemn criticism however sincere or polite, classifying it as racist, even if it were from a fellow Ewe! Indeed, common sense isn't quite common after all to most Ewes.
From the overwhelming backwardness of the people of Volta Region, one can be almost certain to conclude that the bulk of Akans are 'blessed' with specially configured minds that really THINK! We just empower the brilliant and crafty majority of the Akans to do the thinking, while we tag the Ewes like abducted little children, lured away with sugar candies by their abductors after school.
