  Ali A. Mazrui, probably the most eminent African Historian of all time, has categorically stated that Nkrumah was a great African but not a great Ghanaian. His primary vision was to create a "United States of Africa" and become its President, just like the US President.
  
  He thus, at some point in time, was paying much more attention to Africa than Ghana. Economic and social conditions were fast deteriorating in Ghana while he was busily spending Ghana's meagre resources to support other African countries to fight for their independence.
  
  When Ghanaians started complaining to give expression to their disaffection with his approach, he responded by quickly declaring himself life president without a vice president and turned into a dangerous despot, enacting obnoxious laws that allowed him to detain and imprison citizens forever without trial.
  
  This is what led to his overthrow...there was no constitutional means to remove him from power. The same election that brought him to power was no longer available to Ghanaians to decide whether they still wanted him to be their leader or wanted a change in leadership.
  
  While other African countries were praising him because he was using his country's wealth to support their struggles for independence, Ghanaians were suffering severe economic hardship and living under extremely repressive and fearful dictatorship.
  
  So he was a great African but a bad Ghanaian...says Ali A. Mazrui.
