I agree with you that Rockson has, in some of his previous articles on the Kumawu Chieftaincy crisis, been unnecessarily caustic and disrespectful, and even flagrantly offensive, but in this article, he has shown some level-headedness and objectivity. He seems very rational in this article, and articulated his points poignantly.

We may disagree with his position on the issue at stake but we have to give him his due to let him honestly and objectively argue out his case with provable facts.

I think one main issue Rockson has been harping on since the beginning is whether the Asantehene, as gloriously eminent as he is, does have the AUTHORITY to rule on who MUST be the Kumawuhene. We must note that suggesting a candidate for the Stool is not the same as ruling for someone to occupy it.

To most ordinary folks who are not particularly well-informed, it would make sense to assume that the Otumfuor reserves that right. But a deeper research for the truth might bring us to what exactly is the original status of Manhyia vis-a-vis Kumawu and the other 4 AMANTUO that came together to form the Asante State and eventually evolved into a Kingdom.

Could there have been any unambiguous change of status of Manhyia somewhere along the historical path to re-assign or modify the AUTHORITY of the Asantehene?

Such are the type of questions we all must diligently and honestly explore to answer for conclusive resolution of the Kumawu case and others like it.

So, before we join the chorus of exchanging insults, we must show our maturity and seriousness in bringing a lasting and peaceful closure to the Kumawu case. Therefore, let's not throw aspersions at Rockson, just as we would require of him to be civil, too.

First of all, Otumfuo is not a ceremonial head of Ashanti land. Per customs, he is the owner, leader, and absolute head of every traditional council. No one becomes a chief in Ashanti customs unless he or she uses mponponsuo to swear directly or indirectly the oath of allegiance to Otumfuo. I say this because Amanhene or traiditional council heads swear directly to Otumfuo before they could be recognized and accepted as such while sub-chiefs swear to the Amanhene, thus swearing indirectly to Otumfuo. Otumfuo per customs can reject anybody, even when that person qualifies and has rightly and solemnly gone through laid down traditional procedures. That is his prerogative. He can excommunicate anybody from Ashanti land by himself. That is how powerful the occupant of the golden stool is. As a true Ashanti from Kokofu, it doesn't matter my personal aversion for the person of Asantehene but to publicly impugn and denigrate Manhyia, mponponsuo, and the golden stool is absolutely treasonable per Ashanti customs. I don't regard this Rockson guy as a true Ashanti. Per Ashanti customs succession to any stool is not on rotational basis, as some people sometimes think it should be, but the obaapanin, the queenmother, is the one nominates the one of many royals to be the chief. The chief also have the same right to nominate a qualified person to become the queen based on his personal preference. This is the custom. Please put a stop to your diabolical separatist agenda because a member of your family wasn't given the the Kumawu stool.

He better eject 90% of Kumamawuman because they no longer owe any allegiance to Manhyia and he cannot do anything about it. He cannot eject anyone from Asante or Asahnti Region since is part of the Republic and he is not the Head of the Republic. Asantes should consult with Constitutional Lawyers for clarification.

Clearly then, the other chief cannot also pretend to be seen as a chief until the outcome is determined. So they must also obey the law. When they win then they can equally celebrate and excercise their powers.
The Asantehene is not an absolute monarch and he had never pretended to be one. Even in the Asanteman Council he is expected to operate under consensus.
