  No democracy can thrive without strong institutions, yet the culture that projects a person in authority as 'BIG MAN' is a hindrance in building the strong institutions to safeguard our democracy.
  
  Another obstacle in building strong democratic institutions is our primitive predisposition to power. Most Ghanaians in power do not have the mental acuity to separate themselves from the power of the office they hold, forgetting that power is only vested in the office but not in them. Until the Ghanaian and moreso the African come to the realization they are only as good as the office they hold, the preponderance of corruption will continue unabated.
  
  This brings me to the point I have maintained on this site for sometime now. And my point is no home breed leader who has spent most of his adult life in Ghana can transform the society and economy. Leaders who have lived in Ghana most of their adult lives are victims of the culture and also limited in scope in transforming society and economy. Ghana's independence aspiration was realized only when Nkrumah came to town, and if Kutu Acheampong had allowed Busia to complete his term in office, drainage in Accra and rural development would have become Ghana's strong infrastructure achievements. These two leaders lived most of their lives overseas. The same can be said about Mahamat Gandhi and Lee Kwan Yew who lived in South Africa and Britain respectively for a long time and went back home to transform their respective countries.
  
  It is about time Ghanaians looked overseas for prominent diaspora with vision and mettle to transform the country because the home breed leaders are anything but..

  You are spot on on Lee Kwan Yew! He crafted a vision for Singapore to become a first nation. All citizens rallied behind the vision and Singapore is a powerful nation today. Think about this tiny island without natural resources, gained independence as Ghana about the same time, but pulled through the trappings of a third world nation.
  We need to have a vision framed in such a way that we all rally behind it.
  With a vision and everyone on board, we then need the institutions to work. We operate in Ghana as though we are a dystopian nation.
  Laws are laws and every body from the President to the messenger must be subject to the law. In some democracies, irrespective of your position in society when you commit a crime it is never condoned. The culprit faces his fair portion of his guilt. That is non exiistant in Ghana as we have people brandishing their power to free criminals.
  Until we are able to deconstruct our laws for the laws to be understood by everyone without fear or favor, our democracy will continue at this slow pace ....
  You raised a beautiful point about diasporeans with the necesary acumen, skill, expertise, commitment and educational background to jump into the political foray.
  I could not agree with you more. The last time we submitted a proposal dubbed, 'Diaspora engagement initiatives: A pilot study of Ghanaians in the New York area and its Tri-states', the purpose was to map out diaspora geography relating to skills and competencies and how government could harness and exploit these skills for sustainable devt back home. Proposal is probably tucked up somewhere...We are not open to change and change is a sine qua to development
  Let me close by refering to a vision crafted by Col Acheampong ...the operation feed yourself mantra... Everybody rallied behind this vision and it was catching up until his demise...So for me, I do believe in a well crafted vision for Ghana for development.

  Lee Kwan Yew couldn't have achieved much for his country without dictatorial rule. Inasmuch Ghanaians have become apathetic to dictatorship and bemoan any leader with dictatorial tendencies, is our country ripe for a visionary benevolent dictator with a conviction of purpose just like LKY? Because democracy per se cannot be a panacea for development in Africa unless it is backed by a modicum of force.
  
  If Ghanaians in the 60s could not tolerate Nkrumah's mild dictatorship, how much more can they tolerate any form of dictatorship in our present democratic milieu. No well crafted vision as you have suggested will meet Ghana's litmus test for development in our democracy, unless the governing party has the overwhelming numbers in Parliament to ram through the well crafted vision, and I doubt if any of the home breed leaders has the intellectual wherewithal for such vision. Don't forget, nation building is not for dummies, but unfortunately for Ghana all our past leaders have been dummies with the exception of Dr. Nkrumah and Dr. Busia who lived in overseas extensively before coming back for the love of the country. Mind you, Nkrumah achieved a lot in Ghana's development in a little over nine years due to the overwhelming majority he had in Parliament. Yes Akufo-Addo has the majority but does he have mental wherewithal to craft a vision for Ghana's development. I doubt it.

  Of course, we or they have just gained independence and the less you talk about radical posture toward devt, which is and has been viewed by many as dictatorial, the better you see the worh of these leaders in their visions and strategies for devt for their nations.
  And, so now, am terribly shocked that you are proposing a no-vision-policy for development for a nation? What must you be thinking about development for Ghama?
  How can you exclude a visionary plan in your contemplation for devt where as it is all over about vision about devt?
  Hey, a vision for a nation is prime, effective and doable. Its about change ...and it appears people will kick against change no matter what...You got it on your first post on culture and suddenly bloviating

Left to me alone the attoney general by law should be appointed by the main opposition at the time- so that the attoney general from on-set will have very little interest in helping the gov in power and their cronies to steal. Look at the sheer OPEN corruption from Mahamas gov- akuffo adddo's gov to me will not be any different- wait and see (no matter how non corrupt he Addo really is- infact Mahama himself is not corrupt as well- it is the people round him). Our institutions are week-simple put . Rawlings is my main culprit because if he Rawlings were to be a true anti corruption man, this (attorney general from main opposition)is what he should have insisted on right from the 4th republic. we Blacks have never figured out that when revenue from the nation is shared properly and the majority poor are taken care of it benefits all of us because we will have a fair country where things work. A typical Black man will not care if he lives in a big white mantion from corruption were all his surroundings are poor and surrounded with ribbish,bad road,no electricity, no water etc etc. Our mentally needs to change
