Do you know how many words English language has "borrowed" if not stolen from other languages? "tariffs" for example, as in taxes, is Arabic. The list will be too long to put here, but you can easily find out. We can do same in Ghana. All those words you mentioned have Twi equivalents, the problem is you, not having indept knowledge of the Twi language.
Let us grow up and dump our inferiority complex: follwing Abrofo at ALL COST. What we get following them are disresect, discrimination, disregard, marginalization and put-down. Why should they give us respect when we regard their culture more than our? We have created the impression that we have nothing good worthy of adopting by them

All those of you calling for a Ghanaian language to be made national language are fools and shallow thinkers who are more driven by ethnic supremacy rather than intelligence and common sense.
Bashing the using of the white mans language as a slave mentality is more laughable, because before the white man arrived in Africa there was no record of a written African language as had been done in other parts of the world. Without the white man there might possibly no written African language as of today and don't tell me about Egypt because that will be another topic of discussion.
Have you fools forgotten that non of our so called African languages had developed beyond fufu pounding? Before we even think of making any local language official we need to get off our lazy asses and work hard to develop the language first. It is from there that we can proceed.
And before you point to the Arabs, the Japanese, Koreans, Chinese etc as using their own language do not forget they have a written language for years and as result have a very well developed written system.
The flip side is if we adopt one main language such as Twi other languages will be on the path of extinction as is happening to Ga now in Accra. Are we ready for the division and schism that such a move will result in?
Im done for now.

When we begin writing in our local languages then our wisdom will be well articulated. We have a lot to offer but we are bogged down to foolhardiness. Yes I do research and I have began to write a Mathematics book in Twi. The few Chapters I have written when used in the classroom , the students began to understand the beauty of Mathematics and its implications. I write my research in Physics in TWI so that none of my colleagues can steal my ideas since they do not understand what I am saying. With this I have so far obtained six patents in the US. I have had my ideas stolen before.
The writer is not Asante boy but I learnt to write in Twi because it is a beautiful language full of wisdom and more accommodating people.

I teach the Twi Language and find it frustrating that many of our traditional rulers, those supposed to be the custodians of our languages and culture, do not know it.
Secondly, who writes the language and how many of us can read it?
I also teach the English Language, having taught it in the UK, and can safely conclude that the majority of us speak and write our own version of English. It is pretty much the same way we speak and write Twi.
Where, therefore, is our argument? Will using a Ghanaian Language up the pace of our national development? Or is it the use of the English Language that is hampering our progress as a nation?
Now to my focal question: Our parliamentary business is conducted in English. How does someone whose understanding and use of that language is that limited, contribute to the progress of our country, in her role as as a Member of Parliament? For those of us who may not know, Parliamentary business is mainly done through committees and involves a lot of research. Is the pretty lady going to be a liability to our current parliament?

Sika,
You have made some valid points. Those calling for Twi to be made the national language are indeed fools and mere ethnic supremacists. As such, they can't recognise that Twi is not the mother tongue of the majority of Ghanaians, even though a majority of Ghanaians may be speaking it now. They don't even know that the majority of Ghanaians ARE NOT AKANS! Akans together, with their various dialects, with even the Nzemas grouped among them, form the largest ethnic group, now about 47% of the pop.
The same arguments this bigot used to claim that even those foreigners who were born and bred in the UK and speak only the English language would never be recognised as English can be used against non-Akans learning to speak Twi too. To many non-Akans, Twi is just as Greek to them as any other foreign language. They'd certainly to have a world language imposed on them than a parochial language like Twi which have been left stunted since the 1960s, just as other Ghanaians languages whites put into the written form.
The ignorant fool thinks that who English are today have progeny dating back to posterity, completely failing to recognise that successive invasions from continental Europe, with William the Conqueror being the last, from by migrations over the centuries of other Europeans, have led to the English language and the people known as the English.
Btw, some Africans developed written language before the whites came. Ethiopia stands up tall amongst them. Amharic has been written for 1000s of years. I learned their form of mathematics is behind the algorithms that form the basis of the computer language. The ancient Congo Kingdom also had a form of written notations, just as a kingdom in the Cameroon.
Having said that, when they point to those Asian countries and others as using their own languages, they seem to forget that they have had written languages for 1000s of years. They languages continue to be developed through their active actions of their scholars, adding new words to cover new things. Over the years, one language, usually that of the supreme ruler, assumed dominance over others, just as Mandarin Chinese has done in China.
They may speak in their languages but their political leaders are very highly educated people, some of whon are very fluent in English, French, Russian, Germans, etc., having studied overseas. In Ghana, it is only the illiterates, semi-illiterates and the poorly educated people who can't speak good English. English is a measure of how well a person is educated. The crass, mediocre thinking that the un-educated can understand and run modern governance systems and institutions is behind allowing a stark illiterate like Akua Donkor to form a political party, with the delusion that she could be President of Ghana. Tweah! No wonder Ken Kuranchie came out of prison and blurted out that Ghanaians were not civilised!
Former Prime Minister Bathiar imposed Malay as the national language in Malaysia in order to give an advantage to his less educated fellow Malays over the dominant Chinese an Indian migrants. One of the actions he took before his retirement was to re-instate English as the national language. The Chinese and Indians made sure their children acquired proficiency in English through private tuition or education in America. Instead of their dominance reducing, it rather increased in many respects. They became partners to the foreign investors. Malay graduates struggle to express themselves in English, as those who came to invest in Ghana. Others have therefore traveled that perilous road before in this increasingly competitive world and found it unworthy of continuing. We shall therefore not sit down and allow some uneducated people to lead as down a blind alley.
Can that woman even read and write Twi so that she can read translated legislation into Twi? Look, it is a pure anomaly that she is Parliament.
We in the FTOS Campaign have got masters and PhD holders reading our articles and they frankly confessing that they could offer informed opinions because the field of oil contracts is not their areas of specialisation and we have people defending this school drop-out as fit to be MP and calling for Twi to be imposed on Ghana in order to accommodate un-educated Akans in the governance system. Tweah! Let them operate at the local or district level then, as my sister advised Akua Donkor to continue doing. Yeah! That was when she was in charge of the Ash/R's AG Dept and she used to come for free advice.
You ain't heard the last of this!

The question is: Was this MP forced to make her speech in English? Why did she exert herself so painfully to speak publicly in a foreign language when she wasn't confident to do so?
Even in England, no one laughs when a non-English person makes a load of mistakes. The English are very good at comprehending even the mistakes foreigners are making. The reason the MP's speech has attracted a lot of derision is, in my opinion, the painful manner she addressed the predominantly Ghanaian audience in a foreign language. What prompted her to deliver her speech in English caused the problem for her, nothing else.
Folks, leave the lady alone. She should be forgiven for making an effort.

4. An Englishman hardly opens his mouth when he speaks. The Ghanaian opens his mouth so wide ten flies would have crawled in and out by the time he finished one sentence.

I have two friends from Japan and China these guys tell me we the Africans are fools to assimilate all what belongs to our colonial masters that is why we are not doing well even in academic. They challenge me to start teaching our kids in the language they really understand and see the difference. Let me also cheep in here the kind of English language we speak ends in Ghana most Americans do get us when we speak the English language because of our accent. It's obvious you are the one showing stupidity here: for how long can you hang on to colonized mindset? Who told you China has only one language? Mandarin, Wu, Miu, Yue just to mention but a few are all Chinese languages, but commonsense made them choose Mandarin as a national language, because majority of them speak and understand it. Even Japanese is spoken with numerous dialects, but they work around it to get a national language, rather than adopting a foreign one.

Why are people so angry with the Akwatia MP in the person of Ama Sey? Why? The lady said that she couldn't completed standard sever so her command of the English language is not that good but that did not deter people to vote for her by defeating her opponent who was a lawyer.
Now, what has the lady done wrong? Just because she isn't fluent with the English language? Who made English the official language of the world? Whites do not respect us because they see us as being the most useless people walking the earth. Without them, we may have no sense of direction. Our great grand parents weren't crawling on their knees when the "uninvited Whites" came to our shores and I see no reason why some of us cannot weaned ourselves off the Whites. Gradually, we will lose our language which they termed it as "dialect" which means what?
Respect, they say is earned and till we respect ourselves, nobody will respect us.

Fight over cat meat lands brothers in jail, hospital
KWADWO BAFFOE DONKOR 11 APRIL 2014
A misunderstanding between two brothers over cat meat has resulted in one of them being in critical condition at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
For causing unlawful harm to his brother, Eric Fobih, 28, a mason, has been sentenced to one year in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court.
Eric, who pleaded guilty to the one count of causing unlawful harm preferred against him by the prosecution, was convicted on his own plea by the court, presided over by Ms Afua Adu-Amankwah and sentenced accordingly.
In passing the sentence, the judge said though the crime committed was second felony and carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, she took into consideration the fact that the convict was not known to the law, his youthful age “and besides, he pleaded guilty at his first appearance.’’
Facts
Presenting the facts of the case, Inspector Daniel Opoku, told the court that the convict, a mason and Nkansah, unemployed were both residents of Kokoso, a suburb of Kumasi.
He said on March 27, 2014, the two brothers had a meal of cat meat for lunch and reserved some for their supper after which they both left the house.
However, he said after they had left, Nkansah sneaked into the house and ate the rest of the meat.
According to Inspector Opoku, when Eric returned later in the evening and realised that his elder brother had eaten the meat, he confronted him and that resulted in a fight.
Mr Opoku said in the process, Eric took a cutlass that was lying on the ground, and inflicted deep wounds on the hands and legs of the brother.
The victim was rushed to the Emergency and Trauma Unit of KATH where he had remained on admission.
Later on, the case was reported to the police leading to Eric’s arrest.

Nobody can stop us speaking our own language/languages. An MP in Ghana should be literate in English. Is this too much for an Asante to understand? Asante language does not contain more than 30,000 words. So a lot of scientific and technical words simply does not exist in Twi.
And with more than 60 languages in Ghana, MPs needs to understand each other. You cannot impose Twi on Frafra or Dagomba MP. It has caused a lot of wars in some African countries. We can avoid that. If you don"t want to speak English, then an MP is not the right job for you. Obetsibi Lamptey, former NPP chairman lived in Ghana all his life but did not speak any of the Ghanaian languages. Was that a problem? No. My own sister left school at form 1 because she hated school. She does her own business but if she decides to become an MP,then she would be required to be proficient in English. Simple!

Come on! Why should this discussion degenerate into such a turbid fudge of tribal feud? The tribal insults thrown around here, and the baseless suspicion that some tribal superiority would be implied for choosing a particular language ought to be dropped.
The original issue was the justification for using a local language as our lingua franca, instead of English.
Whatever language that happens to be chosen must satisfy certain consensus criteria. On the surface, one could clearly realize that it must be a language that is, probably, already most widely spoken, written, and adopted for learning in Schools to an advanced stage, and has a large and easily expandable lexicon that could easily absorb functional foreign technical terms which don't have precise equivalent translation in our vernacular. Other criteria could be added for fuller functionality.
The other crucial factor that might be looked into is how easy the language could be learnt or taught.
We don't have to be at war to determine which tribe's language ought to be chosen. It is only those who are bitten by the bigotry-bug that think the choice of any language for our lingua franca is some concession or acknowledgment that the native speakers of the language are superior to all other folks. That is baloney!
It was long suggested that Hausa could be such language for us in Ghana, given how expansive it had already rooted in West Africa. But many, at the time, thought it was quite an original native language to Ghana. So, it could well be Ewe, Ga, Gonja, Efutu, Twi or Nzema, what-have-you. Whichever is selected does not change who we really are. We would be using it only as a tool, instead of the English Language, which we have so wrongly bestowed irrational eminence to, and elevated as some calibration of one's intellect.
East Africans who use Swahili across boundaries do not necessarily confer any superior humanity on the original speakers of that language versus all others who later come to speak it. Swahili was adopted especially to facilitate commercial interactions in Africa's oriental region.
We must, therefore, stop being too sentimental about which local language might be chosen for such a lingua franca, and be more objective in assessing which would most appropriately satisfy the necessary criteria for such a language.
Long Live Ghana!!!

You are either not Ghanaian or naïve. You will see the true colours of the proponents of this one local adoption thing if the criteria were changed from most widely spoken in Ghana(twi and it's variants) to say most useful in Africa (for Pan African trade, country cohesion etc). You can speak Ewe in Benin, Togo, Nigeria and of course Ghana. You can speak Nzema in both Ivory Coast and Ghana. Hausa probably has the greatest reach of all. To me these are way more useful than Twi!
Rather than being "inward" looking I dare those promoting this thing to be "outward" looking. Suggest any of the widely spoken languages in Africa as one to choose (not little Ghana!)and they will all shut up. Dude this is all tribal nothing else. Read between the lines as they say :)

Only ENSLAVED MINDS have such absurd infatuation with spoken and written English. We fail OUR TALENTED humans in everything else, because they failed English??? Talented citizens of ours have passed on, without fulfilling their potentials and talents because they failed in English! MY GOODNESS!!!
WISDOM is of GOD and everything else is of man......So, if you lack WISDOM you will believe that speaking somebody else's language and aping around their lifestyle, will make you be like them.
It is the WISDOM that comes out of a lingo is what matters but not having others lingo shoved down your throat, that makes you think like them. (PLEASE THINK DEEPLY ABOUT IT).
Osei Mensah Bonsu, should have stood tall to advocate the speaking of our local dialects everywhere, let alone parliament. He doesn't look English to me.
How come your policies have put us in ABJECT POVERTY? And the Chinese here stealing our rich natural resources from under our noses, whilst we are busy chasing NDC / NPP cars and speaking 'BIG, 'BIG English'?
Does the speaking of English give us any wisdom at all? How come the Chinese provided us with the seats in parliament? Why? Can't we do them ourselves with all the English?
So, please LET'S THINK and realize that there's more to it, than aping other peoples' lifestyles and lingo.
And GHANAIANS please STOP the infatuation with calling our MPs 'honouables'......let them work for such titles.
We need to WAKE UP, GHANAIANS!!! The Chinese and Japanese Premiers don't speak lingos of others......their lingos are translated....does it make them less of a human???
Or are we waiting for Indians to make films in TWI for us to treasure them? Or Koreans to sing in Twi for us to patronize their CDs???? HOW STUPID CAN WE CONTINUE TO BE???
And if you try to make sense to humanity in Ghana, they label you as an NDC or NPP. HOW SAD!!!!!!

Why Are Europeans 'Bad English Shaming' Their Politicians?
English has become the lingua franca of Europe. And politicians who can't speak it well are getting roundly mocked by their own citizens.
FEARGUS O'SULLIVAN
If you stumble or make mistakes when trying to speak a foreign language, spare a thought for Europe’s hapless politicians. Recently, the continent’s political masters have been slapped by a new form of satirical attack—Bad English Shaming. A viral-video sub-trend, Bad English Shaming sees public figures foolhardy enough to let their rusty English be recorded on camera getting mocked and mauled for their poor foreign language skills.
Exhibit A of the trend is an impassioned speech made this month by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. Supposedly, it was in English. Renzi’s speech is so halting and garbled it’s hard to understand what he’s actually talking about, though it contains occasional lucid but surreal gems as, “He invent the telephone to speaking about in the theatre." Since then, clips of Renzi’s stumbling performance have gone viral. Together, the subtitled version above and this nattily sampled Rock and Roll take have got over 2 million hits between them.
Then there were Madrid Mayor Ana Botella’s attempts last year to sell her city as a contender for the Summer Olympics. Mayor Botella’s stilted, halting English made her a national laughing stock, a reputation she has since solidified through gaffe after gaffe. What is telling about the derision for Botella’s efforts is that, from a native speaker’s perspective, they don’t seem too bad. Sure, viewers have to contend with her awful, hokey delivery (“Madrid is FAAAAAN!”) and the tendency to slap a mystery “e” on the start of words, but she still puts the average Brit’s Paella ‘n’ chips Spanish to shame. In Spain, however, the speech seems to have half the nation holding their sides. Botella will probably be Ms. Café con Leche until the end of her days now.
The dominance of English as a European lingua franca is total nowadays, even in countries where Brits and Americans rarely tread.
I doubt she’ll speak English in public again, but for European public figures today, even that won’t necessarily spare you. In 2009, Germany’s then-foreign-minister Guido Westerwelle was lampooned just for refusing to answer a question in English. Admittedly, I see the point here. Westerwelle’s brief was international, and with his mixture of oiliness and awkwardness, his spikiness was always destined to attract notice.
There’s a striking connection between these three little spats: The ridicule all came not from native English speakers, but from the politicians’ own compatriots.
It has not been ever thus. Francois Mitterrand’s exceedingly brief 1986 foray into English at the Statue of Liberty’s centenary celebrations was widely taken as a badge of skillful statesmanship. Looking back a few decades further, it was once possible for Italian and French singers to make garbled English-sounding noises that passed among many of their monolingual listeners as the real thing, a style known as "singing in yogurt." Meanwhile, British pop singers who wanted to succeed in Europe often had to translate their songs to have a hope of cracking the market.
Clearly, something radical has changed. It probably isn’t the growth of American or British influence per se, as politically and culturally, these are either no greater than before or slightly on the wane. European English seems in fact to be uncoupling itself from native anglophones, a runaway caboose careering down its own track. The dominance of English as a European lingua franca is so total nowadays that it’s a basic tool for interaction even in countries where Brits and Americans rarely tread, as well as between Europe and other continents. This map shows just how far moderate English fluency has spread in Europe.
n countries where most people speak a Germanic language, at least 50 percent of the population can hold a conversation in English, as they can also in Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Malta, Greece, and Slovenia (and probably in other unlisted countries too). There’s still no shame in continental Europe attached to failing to understand broad British or North American regional accents, but many continental Europeans’ English skills are getting really good. So good, for example, that Scandinavian comedians can now make fun of British accents and count on a fully comprehending audience.
Once the number of English speakers tips over 50 percent, it seems people just get more demanding of each other. It’s one thing for a lazy Brit or American to complain about no one speaking English in Paris (though this happens less and less), but it’s quite another for a Dutch person to complain of the same thing—they’re already making an effort themselves. Like a bachelor’s degree and a clean criminal record, decent English is becoming one of those basic things you need to forge a career in Europe, political or not.
This may be good for native English speakers, at least given their relative reluctance to learn another tongue, but I feel for my European neighbors. If anything could move me to sympathize with continental Europe’s political elite, it’s the thought of someone waiting to be filmed under blazing lights, frantically trying to remember the rules of the past progressive tense.

Italians mock Prime Minister Matteo Renzi for awful English.
Matteo Renzi, the Italian prime minister, has been ridiculed for his poor English.
ltering attempts by Italy’s prime minister, Matteo Renzi, to speak English at a public event have been amusingly lampooned by a video based loosely on the film Grease.
The 39-year-old premier and leader of the centre-Left may model himself on Tony Blair and profess admiration for David Cameron, but his mastery of English leaves a lot to be desired.
The mangling and mispronunciation happened last week when he addressed Digital Venice, a conference in the lagoon city on the “digital economy revolution”.
The prime minister, who was elected earlier this year on promises to shake up Italy’s sclerotic economy and stultifying bureaucracy, stumbled over several words and phrases, including a sentence about “marketing the commercial structure”.
That provided rich pickings for the satirists behind the video, which was gleefully posted on the websites of major Italian newspapers as well as on FacebooK
Footage of his speech is interspersed with clips from Grease, starring John Travolta.
It ends with him saying: “Now is the time of lunch,” rather than “Now, it’s time for lunch.”
Italy collectively winced a few months ago when Mr Renzi gave a speech at 10 Downing St during an encounter with David Cameron.
Many Italians criticised him for being overly-deferential, saying he looked as excited as a schoolboy to be at the heart of government.
“Downing Street, no 10, is a dream for everybody,” Mr Renzi began his address, smiling broadly.
But the youthful prime minister can at least hold his head high in comparison to Silvio Berlusconi – the billionaire businessman, who was premier three times, barely speaks a word of English, although he has good French.
Italian MPs spend hundreds of thousands of euros a year on English lessons but many have a shaky command of the language.
Poor schooling and the dubbing of English-language television and films into Italian has been blamed in part for the low level of English spoken by Italians in general.

Great piece of writing. After all, a language or the spoken word is simply to convey a message. If the message is understood, it has served its purpose. That is all that matters.

If ever we were to have a governance system as practised in China, this debate would be put paid once and for all. My parents are from different tribes in Ghana so I believe I am centrally placed to give a balanced opinion on this matter. I would feel aggrieved at the suggestion of Twi as our national language if both parents were of the same other tribe, as I believe a lot of you are displaying here, and I understand. The problem is we have an ingrained mentality to deliberately resist positive changes that undermines such cultural underpinnings of our lives if the "winner" is someone with the same skin tone us ours. In other words if it isn't my language then to hell with it. It is on record that an emperor in China once saw this looming problem and ordered all his subjects to speak one language. The result today is one harmonious country and it is the same for every developed country on earth today, that the predominant language is adopted and developed so that it is able to flourish and compete in today's world of languages. It is sad to note that the same divisions that plagued our ancestors leading to their underdevelopment and enslavement is still a topic of discussion today. Very sad.

I believe in speaking our own language but the system is that we learn the English language in school. It means if you cannot speak it then you did not go to school. You are simply an illiterate This is the truth. Whether we like it all not the English language has become an international language which no one can do much about it. The English speaking countries have become very giant that everything are expressed in that language. Even pop musics have to be sung in English otherwise you won't make much money. Now back to my sister the MP, how are you going to contribute in law making agendas or get the best for your constituency when you cannot speak or understand the language? How would you understand the intricacies of paliament business which is acquired from formal education or from wide reading. If you are born in UK and do not go to school you are regarded as illiterate even though you can express yourself in English. The issue is can you read or write properly in your own language? A lot of Ghanaians cannot even write Twi, Ga etc. because they did not go to school.
Some years back the UK government was bragging that if they take everything away from UK they can still make money from the English language. This goes to show that to be really successful as a nation you have to have English language alongside your own. Sorry Madam MP they do not speak your language there. It is not too late to start learning.

Kudos to the author of this piece. It's very shameful that 60 years after independence we still depend so heavily on the Whiteman's language to express ourselves. We do not, as the writer said, have a national language. This issue has been on my heart for a very long time. From time to time I chip in ideas on this platform on the need for the nation to do away with the English language as a lingua franca in Parliament and adopt one local language in its place. The author has done very well and I support his idea 100%.The parliamentarians must act now to make it happen.

Sometimes, I find it very difficult to understand why everybody wants their child to speak English especially, the "well-to-do" parents of today. Take a walk with your toddler and the first question that's flinged on them is "how are you?" or "what's your name?" Very infuriating and "completely nonsensical"!
I stand to be corrected but, I know it is in the "books" of GES that our mother tongues are to be used in teaching at the KG and lower primary levels respectively. One thing many people do not know is that, when a child learns to read, write and speak their own language perfect, all other languages - especially English - become easy for them to learn. All those developed nations that we're it itching to surpass were developed by the use of their own languages and not Akan, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, Hausa , etc.
I can't speak Hausa, though, I can speak, read, and write very good Fanti(Fantse) and, the same can be said of my 8-year old daughter who is in primary 2.
People are dying in hospitals, MPs with the best of ideas are stifled in parliament and, children who are potential leaders are underperforming in schools as a result of the barrier called "English language" they have to break.
Please, let us all try our best possible and advocate for the use of our mother tongues and that will go a long way to help us understand ourselves better in all facets of life

Yes,what most people back home do not know is that, the kind of English we speak has assent and therefore, it's "Ghana English ".And it cuts across all academic levels with exception of some few people. My observations is that,we open the mouth too wide to pronounce a word in English exactly as how the Tilapia Fish drinks water in it's habitat(excuse my word),and emphasise is placed to pronounced the last syllable/alphabet of a word. Sentences here has tag: meaning one should know/ differentiate what's a question which requires an answer or not. After being here for sometime whether one could speak as them, or still in the "eti'sen English"; tunning in to English program in Ghana is not any difference between someone, beating an empty pan/pot and a bollte in one's ears,in the afternoon in a tropical Sunsine, from my personal experience. The fact is, English as the formal language was the unfinished Business after attainment of Independence. The first President(Nkrumah( CPP) laid the foundations to correct that, though!.But his efforts was short lived with his overthrow from power. This writer is aware that a Local language as a medium of instructions in School at the time was not possible b'cos, the Textbooks were and are written in English,to this day. Therefore, Ghana needed to developed her Languages.A Ghanaian Language was seriously taught in School at the time.I remember Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah established Ghana School of Languages at Ajumaku in the Central Region, School of Journalism,in Accra.
and a published a News Paper in Ghanaian Language/s(Nkwantabisa), etc.I think an MP or whatever, should feel free to express himself/herself on the floor in Parliament as allowed in the Court,if the contributor to a debate Choose to speak a Local language. That's the way forward. To ridicule a person who can't articulate property in an adopted foreign language(English)
implies a Sick and Confused nation. Sick b'cos it's the idea from the mind that is needed and not in which language her idea or contribution was expressed. That's the reason Ghana has a lot of 'Educated illiterates'(PhD, etc, who cannot read and write their own local language but claims he's Educated!.I think the language problem is part of underdevelopment of a Country,in my personal opinion.
I have not said we should abounden English language.Anyway.

In England, America or any advanced Whiteman's country, nobody mocks anyone, especially a foreigner, when he/she makes constructional or grammatical mistakes when speaking their language. This is because, they know it is not their mother tongue but second language hence pointless laughing at them.
Even the modern day English youth make a lot of grammatical mistakes in their spoken English which others may assume to be slangs but that is how they have come to speak their language and who dare you to correct them. They will tell you it does not take a stranger to tell them how to speak their own language.

What is the working /official/business NB language of Ghana.
The fact that twi is spoken by about 44% of Ghana's population is not panacea that it should be our official language.
If people are allowed to use two because it is their mother tongue what about the rest 56 % of our population, should we hire interpreter for them?
You mention countries Zaire and other countries that they have a national language. Have you made any research to find how they came to adopt the said language as a national language? For your information, Zaire, Senegal ....did not adopt the language of Lingali or wolof because these two languages were widely spoken in Zaire and Senegal respectively. Rather these languages were chosen for various reasons. Some of which are: they spoken by the minority tribe, and they were developed and taught in their schools so that these tribes would not be looked mean upon by the majority tribes. Secondly, so that no has undue advantage over any body. By the way how many Ashanti is willing to study Ga or Efutu? You cleverly drew a wrong analogies by giving Lingali, and other languages as national languages, but what you failed to tell your readership is that these are not their official languages and all their businesses are conducted in their official languages. It is undeniable fact that Ghanaian radio stations abroad run their programs in twi. This is simply because their target audience is not Alan's living in their communities. In fact, there is no point trying to justify mediocrity. The MP is a total disgrace and must go back to school. Did ever write any article in defence of Mad. Akua Donkor when people were reduculing her that she could not speak? When the lat Prof. Mills said, "Ecominy" instead economy and all the said Alan stations you are boasting about were making mockery of him,did you or did you not hear it? What did you do about it? Today, it is a legislature of NPP. Quickly you jump to her defence. Mr. Rockson Adofo, your English is an integral part VB of your personality, your a character, your real self. You can no more get rid of it than your shadow. knowledge of good English gives you poise and confidence. It's employment enables you take your place in all circles confidently without fear or ridicule. Amanda dey should go back to school and polish herself up. Period.

Dear Mr. Rockson, thank you for your piece. When this news first appeared I was abhorred with how ignorantly most Ghanaians are. Those who claim to be educated (Lagonians; KUSTians, etc) they make mistakes all the time in their presentation in Parliament. I will hope that one day these Parliamentarians will be bold enough to do away with English as the official language for communication in Ghana. Honorable Ms. Say please stand firm and use the Twi language in Parliament and let us see if they will throw you out. Then all the masses will demonstrate against the system.

In Canada for example where there are two official languages (French and English) it is often not all that could express themselves with much clarity.
I admire this lady for engaging in politics and representing her constituency to bring the much needed help to her people.. This is a grass root democracy! and it is not reserved just for those that could speak and write English alone...

What does not sit well with me is this contributor calling for Twi to be used as the communicating medium in Parliament. How can MPs who dont speak Twi contribute or do their job? Perhaps we should take the least spoken Ghanaian language and get every Ghanaian to learn it from scratch so we can all start with an equal footing instead of giving one particular tribe an enormous advantage when their language is chosen as a national language.

Oga you are 1000% right.
Adofo's ignorance at its best. Maybe you should confine your writings and articles to "fufu" and "trotro". Clearly, you have no clue about what you were talking about. Take this advice from, sometimes silence is golden.
Mr Adofo, I totally agree with you. It's time we use one of our local languages as our official language. Kwame Nkrumah tried it but those good-for-nothing "mate me ho" destroyers the Akufo Addo parents never saw any good in ...
