As for "Dr" Monney and the GJA...if that isn't life imitating art (in this case, evidence), then I don't know what is. Unfortunately your excellent research won't reach the ears that should hear, even if it does, it goes right back out of the other ear. The media - radio stations etc should take up some of these issues and discuss them, but I guess there is no interest because given the opportunity many would want to be called "Dr" without having ever written a dissertation proposal.

The fact is that ALL OF US in Ghana love big titles too much. It doesn't matter whether the titles are well earned or dubiously obtained, we put too much into paper qualifications.
I was enjoying Tsikata's investigations but I am now seeing some kind of hypocrisy in their endeavours. They are telling us that they have earned PhDs in recognized universities in the USA, and some people have been conferred the same by some backyard institutions in Teshie and these latter people dare append the same titles to their names as they (Tsikata and Dotse) also precede their names with.
If Tsikata and Dotse use Dr, why shouldn't other people also use the same? Does it really really matter if those people really wrote a dissertation or not? Why shouldn't SAS also call himself Dr?
Why do Tsikata and Dotse also not refrain from using the title "Dr"? After all, it is not the designation that matters but what you can really produce!
People are free to call themselves whatever they want to. Newspapers are free to call people by whatever designations those people want to be called. Some newspapers never call anybody by their titles. The Economist still uses pseudonymous reporters and hardly calls anybody Dr or Prof. Yet that newsmagazine is one of the most leading in the world. It's just a matter of style.
I can understand if people use fake degrees to get government jobs. Then it is the duty of the appointing body to see that the qualifications are not only genuine but also relevant.
The fault lies in ourselves - all of us including Tsikata and Dotse who think they should call themselves Dr but others should not. If we put more emphasis on people's output rather than the qualifications they carry on their foreheads, Tsikata and Dotse too shouldn't be appearing on ghanaweb calling themselves Dr.

You, Amable, too cannot see beyond the symptoms to the disease itself. Yet you want to educate someone by by mentioning Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, two glowing examples of achievers who do not have PhDs - the very point I am making about the output being more important than the epithet a person adds to his or her name.
Daily Graphic has the right to call people Dr even if those degrees are offered by backyard universities. It is every newspaper's duty to have a policy on that issue.

You are accusing the authors of not addressing the basic problem. Why don't you tell us wha the basic problem is then because if you read the first piece the authors wrote, they documented their research systematically. Remember they are academics, they asked a question and sought answers to them. They are not the ones to solve the problem of accreditation, in fact they didn't even have to suggest alternatives to the problem for their paper to be called academically rigorous. That is the job of policy-makers.

But now I am beginning to see another angle to it. It is one thing pointing out that people have used fake degrees to acquire government positions of influence for which they are paid fat salaries and from which positions they try to educate others who are released into society. It is quite another thing crying out all the time that people shouldn't call themselves what they want to call themselves.
Esi, the basic problem in our society, as I pointed out in my first input, is that WE PUT TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON PAPER QUALIFICATIONS!!! We virtually worship people who parade fat degrees on paper. Even people with genuine degrees in Ghana (like Dotse and Tsikata) throw their weight about expecting people to virtually worship them as if the mere possession of the degree is what makes the man!!! That is the reason people are using all manner of methods to acquire all kinds of degrees.
Esi, unless our society accepts that people with PhDs don't necessarily have all the knowledge that we suppose they have in Ghana, this problem will not be solved.
Dotse and Tsikata can concentrate on exposing people occupying government positions by virtue of their fake degrees (like the VCs of UPSA) and leave people who just want to use their honorary degrees (genuine or otherwise) alone. There is no need going after them too.
In the end, if everybody in Ghana is calling himself or herself Dr, we shall begin to realise that the actual products of a person's education are far far more important than the letters they write before and after their names.
I cannot call myself president of Ghana because we have only one president. But if I am mad enough to go about calling myself President of Ghana when I am not, that's my problem...
Esi, don't you see that we give tooooo much respect to people with PhDs in Ghana? Even Mills insisted on his being called President Professor Mills, you cannot call Bawumia without the title of Dr...
Esi, look at it from a conceptual level: Dotse and Tsikata are telling us that they are genuine PhDs who should call themselves Dr, others are not genuine and should not call themselves such. This is a bagatelle!!!
