  It's not only in Ghana but in most developing countries that think they are now escaping poverty. But it's a sham.
  
  Shopping malls have been around for a very very long time. The history says the idea started in England but was quickly taken over by the US after the Second World War. And that country has been building malls so often that it even almost went out of fashion.
  
  Suddenly, after all these years, we only now seem to be bitten by the craze. Why were we so late?
  
  But the more relevant question is: to what extent can we use shopping malls as an index of our development?
