Africans especially the educated ones are mostly oblivious of their past. Africans' proclivity to conclude that anything African is demonic partly accounts for the sinking traditions and history. I strongly disagree with you on your distinction between the church and the cult. There is no religion without rituals. If Christians perform rituals, are you insinuating that is not a cult? It is very derogatory to limit African traditional religion to cultism without recourse to the fact that no religion is bereft of rituals. The habit of sacrificing our beliefs on unholy altars of Euro-centric convenience must stop! African traditional religion is pragmatic and realistic shrouded in traditions and customs. It has no founder and no single scripture but very incontrovertible.

"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people",(Karl Max). The bad side of religion far far outweigh the benefits. The perennial wars in Ireland, the insurrection of the ISIS, the Boko Harams...and its concomitant senseless killings are all fallouts of religious ingenuities.
In all my adult years, in searching for the truth, I have come to the realization that religion is really the basis, the precursor of all the atrocities meted out to mankind on this planet. Is it any wonder that Jehovah Witnesses are suffering persecutions in Russia for failure to observe state protocols? For me religion provides little hopes for those who have conditioned their minds with the false hopes that the Obinims and the TB Josuahs can cause manna to fall for them.
The only good side of religion is that it provides refuge, albeit bondage, and phantom hopes for JUST, and only JUST, the helpless, the oppressed, the down trodden, the poor and the needy. The helpless poor, the heartbroken, the oppressed, particularly women, run to shrines and churches to receive some word of comfort to feed their souls, which is a good move. But even here, most of these poor souls end up becoming victims of circumstances. These fetishes and the so called men of god take advantage and turn their clients into sex machines. Whilst nubile girls are being bonk on daily basis at the Trokosi shrines, we have the Obinims screwing the wives of his junior Pastors, and shit like that. Whither shall we go? And all this happen because of lies, deception and dishonesty of the so called religious leaders.
Karl Max cannot be faulted when he rightly and succinctly opine that Religion is the opiate of the masses, just to paraphrase. Think about that!

Max had erroneous impression that capitalist used religion to exploit the working class and thus, the opium of the masses. In his protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism published in 1905, Max Weber coached Karl Max how religion (Church) rather sparked-off industrial revolution in Europe. Apart from a handful disadvantages of religion, religion offers more blessings than harm. Do not generalize that religion is evil.

Mr. Nana Yaw Osei,
Thanks for the comments. As indicated in the article, there is a gap in the knowledge base that needs people like you to speak up. We spend a lot of time ignoring these topics without understanding the implications. If you have some time, it will be a good read if you are able to write an article and educate us on what you know about the African traditional religion or better still if you have some reference materials that would be great. Thanks
