  Our cetacean cousins (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) had a problem: they needed to jump out of the water every now and then to breathe. How then could they sleep and stay alive in the water?
  
  As usual, nature figured out a way. Only half of the cetacean brain goes to sleep at any one time while the other half stays awake.
  
  Another fact well known to neuroscientists: sleep is somehow related to depression. If you stay up all night, don't be too surprised if you find yourself "feeling sad" for no reason the following afternoon.
  
  Another point worth noting: the brain continues working during sleep, analyzing and solving intractable problems. In fact, more often than not, you'll wake up with a perfect solution to a problem you had been struggling with the day before. Take note, students preparing for exams!
