128 persons with disabilities receive support to be economically independent

A total of 128 people living with disabilities in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis have received items worth about 190,000 cedis in an effort to make them economically independent.

The items, which included deep freezers, welding equipment, sewing machine and start-up capital, were funded from the 3 per cent District Assembly Common Fund allocation to persons with disabilities.

The allocation to the persons with disabilities seeks to reduce poverty among all PWDs, particularly those outside the formal sector of employment, and enhance their social image through dignified labour.

At a ceremony to present the items to them, metro chief executive, Anthony K.K Sam explained they resolved to give them items as against the usual money because the Assembly wants them to start economic ventures.

“We want you to be economically independent so you don’t depend on others for sustenance,” the chief executive said.

Metro director for the Social Welfare Department, Deborah Kwabiah advised the beneficiaries to put the items to good use.

“A team will be monitoring you to ensure you put them to the use they are meant for,” she told the beneficiaries

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the help.

Joseph Nicholas Cornelius, who received welding equipment, said he intends setting up his own business.
