Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the flagbearer of NPP
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) unveiled its 2024 manifesto on Sunday, August 18, 2024, ahead of this year's general elections scheduled for December 7.
The manifesto, titled Selfless Leadership: Bold Solutions for Jobs and Business, embodies the vision of the flagbearer of the party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, if he is elected president.
GhanaWeb takes a look at some of the four ways Dr. Bawumia intends to improve Ghana's health care system
1. Completion of all Agenda 111 hospitals
Dr. Bawumia plans to complete all the Agenda 111 hospital projects as envisioned by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to ensure that Ghanaians in every district and region in the country have access to quality healthcare services.
The project includes the provision of healthcare infrastructure in line with the government’s commitment to ensuring universal healthcare for all citizens and the attainment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3), which seeks to reduce by one-third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being by 2030.
On August 2, 2024, the Minister for Health, Dr. Okoe-Boye, attributed the delays in completing the Agenda 111 projects to the insufficient capacity of some local contractors.
He made this known during his appearance before the Government Assurance Committee of Parliament, where he addressed assurances and commitments made on the floor of the House.
Dr. Okoe-Boye explained that while the government aimed to support local businesses by engaging domestic contractors, this decision has led to delays due to their inability to meet project deadlines. As a result, some contractors are being replaced to address these setbacks, which have contributed to revised completion timelines.
“Some Agenda 111 projects will see contractor changes due to performance issues,” he said.
When completed, it is expected to offer improved access to healthcare for all Ghanaians. In the process, the outcome will also come with a model of accelerated construction of health facilities developed for future health projects.
2.Recruitment of more Health professionals
Dr. Bawumia promises to recruit more doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals offering improved conditions of service.
He also intends to bring healthcare services to one's doorstep through the completion of the digitisation of public healthcare institutions under the E-health projects.
The E-health projects spearheaded by the government include the provision of medical drones and the establishment of the e-pharmacy platform.
3.Scale up Telehealth Services
Dr. Bawumia also aims to establish two additional drone delivery sites in addition to the existing ones at Funsi and Kintampo to ensure total nationwide coverage and interoperability of the National Electronic Pharmacy Platform (NEPP) with public and private healthcare facilities.
4. Offering incentives for healthcare workers
Dr. Bawumia also promises to offer incentives to healthcare workers to enable them purchase vehicles with engine capacity of up to 1,800cc, aligning with the existing deprived area incentive package for health workers in the country.
