The Accra Golden Lions Club (AGLC), in collaboration with the St. John’s Grammar Senior High School, has donated more than 150 units of blood to the Korle-Bu Blood Bank in Accra.
The donation is to mark the Club’s annual blood donation event.
The President of the Club, Mr Bernard Owusu, said the AGLC was an umbrella of the Lions Club International, a service organization with main purpose of serving the blind and the less privileged in society.
He said it was the aim of the Lions Club International to serve about 100 million people worldwide by 2015 by way of blood donation, free screening for HIV, sickle cell and sexually transmitted diseases.
“Last year the AGLC screened about 600 people in six communities and out of that four people were tested HIV positive,” he said.
A worker from the Korle- Bu National Blood Service, Mrs Sophire Blankson, said such an initiative was a good one because every minute people were transfused with blood at the Korle - Bu Teaching Hospital and that mades the blood bank to run out of blood very quickly.
She appealed to organizations and individuals to donate blood to the Bank to help save lives.
The donation, which took place at the assembly hall of the St. Johns Grammar School, saw students, majority of who were females, donating blood enthusiastically.
However, some students were asked not to donate because they were not up to the donating standards.
Before a person can donate, he or she must weigh above 50kg, the hemoglobin must be at right levels and must be 17 years of age and above.
Students who donated were given exercise books, pens and other goodies.
The next stop for the AGLC is the Labone Senior High School.
