Amicus Onlus presents Ambulances to hospital

Saltpond (C/R), May 20, GNA - Amicus Onlus Ghana, an Italian health and education non-governmental organization, has presented an ambulance worth 30,000 euros to the Saltpond Government Hospital to support critical health care in the area.

Mr Akumba Ben Asamodning, Country Representative of Amicus Onlus Ghana who made the presentation, said the ambulance was to facilitate transportation of referral cases.

Mr Asamodning said the organization had also made donations of medical supplies to the Central Regional Hospital, the Anomabu Health Centre and the Abura Dunkwa Hospital to complement government's efforts at providing quality healthcare to the people.

He said the organization sought to promote health and education needs of Ghanaians particularly in deprived areas of the country and that it was in that spirit that it collaborated with Central Regional Health Directorate in 2005 to establish a hospital at Biriwa. He said the Saltpond Hospital, which is close to the Takoradi /Accra highway, was sometimes overwhelmed with the large number of accident victims, some of whom needed to be transferred either to the Central Regional Hospital or Korle-Bu, hence the donation. On education, Mr Asamodning said the organization had an institute in Accra (Baobab Academy) where it trains the youth to acquire entrepreneurial skills and provide them with funds to set up their own businesses.

He said plans were far advanced to start a university college at Anomabu where master's degree programmes in business and sciences would be offered. He said Fort Williams at Anomabu would be renovated for use by the university and would be affiliated to the University of Perugia in Italy. Dr Kwabena Sarpong, Saltpond Municipal Director of Health Service, expressed gratitude to the organization saying it would make referrals easy.

He said the hospital faced a lot of challenges due to the large number of accident victims it received, adding that it had established an accident emergency unit and appealed for assistance to have it furnished.
