Abura Gyabankrom (C/R), May 17, GNA - The Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District Assembly is to embrace the Community Health Planning Service (CHPS) concept to make health-care delivery accessible to the people. Mr. Job Acquah Markin, District Chief Executive (DCE), said this at the annual review and award ceremony for health volunteers in the District at Abura Gyabankrom organised by the District Health Directorate and the Mankessim programme area of Plan, Ghana, a Non-Governmental Organisation.
The DCE said under the concept health posts manned by nurses and volunteers offer services in rural communities.
Mr Markin said eight CHPS compounds had been established while two more were to start operation soon, adding that the Assembly would ensure that more were established throughout the District. The volunteers, including those for community health, traditional birth attendants and peer educators trained by the organisation were presented with wax prints and enamel bowls.
The DCE commended them for their good work and said the awards were in recognition of the good work they were doing in the communities. Mr. Benedict Gyapong, Community Facilitator of Plan, Ghana, said 1,072 health volunteers had been trained by the organisation that is operating in 19 communities in the health and education sectors in the district.
Mr. Emerson Kojo Arhia, Acting District Director of Health, said the Directorate was collaborating with the volunteers to disseminate health information in rural areas.
He appealed to the people to cooperate and support the volunteers in discharge of their duties.
Mrs Margaret Nyarko Sampson, District Public Health Nurse, commended Plan Ghana for supporting the activities of the Directorate especially during the National Immunisation Day. She praised the volunteers for their contribution towards the acceptance of health programmes in the rural communities.
