“Be Safe’ condoms are safe

The Acting Director Technical Services at the Ghana AIDS Commission, Cosmos Ohene Adjei, has assured the public that “Be Safe” condoms currently on the market are, contrary to the earlier warning issued by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) declaring the product as unwholesome.

According to him, those condoms declared unwholesome by the FDA were within a range of batch numbers and had since not been in circulation at any public health programme or facility of the Ghana AIDs Commission or the Ghana Health Service.

“The FDA report did not say “Be Safe” as a condom brand is unwholesome, rather, the report pointed to some “Be Safe” condoms with some batch numbers. The report said condoms within that range of batch numbers did not meet the lubrication and full length standard for Ghana and needed to be withdrawn. The report also complained of the existence of some tiny holes in those condoms when stretched. I can assure you that there is no way you can find any of these batch numbers in the “Be Safe” condoms we use for our public health promotions.”

His reaction came an interview with DAILY GUIDE over the wholesomeness of the “Be Safe” condoms that the Ghana AIDS Commission had been promoting during public health activities and was also prompted by the rising concerns of some patrons of the product in Bolgatanga.

According to Mr Adjei, the “Be Safe” is not a new brand of condom in Ghana, and that the brand of condom that had been promoted at various public health programmes by the Ghana Health Service or the Ghana AIDS Commission for the past 10 years.

Even though the report from Food and Drugs Authority over the “Be Safe” condom was released in May this year, the recent publication of issues about the “Be Safe” condom had increased people’s interest in knowing how safe the product is.
