Just one week after the renovation of the Korle-bu Children’s Oncology ward by Vodafone Ghana, smiles can be seen on the faces of both the staff and the patients which reflects the transformation that has taken place on the ward.

A visit to the place revealed that the overall condition of the Children’s Oncology Ward has improved significantly. The principal nurse in charge expressed her satisfaction with the outstanding work that Vodafone had done and noted that the children seem happier with the new environment, and even their illness seems less daunting than before. She stated there is now a better atmosphere and outlook in the ward, which has gone a long way to improve the overall health of children.

The grandmother of an 11 year old female patient, who was diagnosed two years ago, confessed that the outlook of the previous ward was very depressing, and the ward was congested and drab. She went on to say that previously there was no privacy in the bathroom area but with the upgrade of the ward there are now private cubicles, and the ward is now bright, uplifting and encouraging. With a heart-warming smile on her faces, she also mentioned that the playroom has become a favorite of not only her granddaughter, but all the children the children on the ward as well.

This project was undertaken as part of Corporate Social Responsibility projects by the Vodafone Foundation. In order to reach this great achievement, the Foundation had to carry out extensive work, including the overhauling of the entire sewage and roof, renovation of the bathrooms and toilets, create a cytotoxic room where the medication is prepared and stored. There is also a learning room which is to be supported by a teacher from the Ghana Education Services (GES), as well as a recreational room.

The principal nursing officer stated that the new ward had already enhanced her work. She mentioned that the children seemed more relaxed and were really excited with their new environment, which was indeed a pleasure to see.
