The Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association, Professor Ernest Yorke, has commended the establishment of a Civic Education Club at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, calling it a great milestone.

Delivering a speech at the club’s inauguration on August 30, 2025, at Korle Bu, Professor Yorke said, “The establishment of this Civic Education Club underscores the critical role that medical, nursing and other allied health students, now and in the future, play in shaping the policies, health systems, and values of the society we serve.”

The renowned professor emphasised that civic education goes beyond understanding governance and its principles to foster awareness of the factors that impact health systems in the country.

“Civic education is not just about understanding our constitution or the structures of governance, though those are important. It is about fostering a deep awareness of the social, economic, and political factors that impact our health system.

“It is about understanding the intersection of healthcare with policies on education, poverty, sanitation, and the environment. It is about shaping future physicians who are not only capable of diagnosing and treating diseases but are also equipped to advocate for policy changes, address social inequalities, and create a more just and equitable society,” he said.

He added, “It provides an avenue to explore the relationship between health and public policy, to understand the ethical and legal frameworks governing our profession, and to gain insight into how public health initiatives are designed, implemented, and evaluated.”
