Detection of infections crucial for mothers and babies

A call has been made for the early detection and treatment of infections among new mothers and babies to reduce avoidable deaths and disability.

Madam Eleanora Portia Baffour-Agyei, Executive Director, Centre for Pregnancy and Childbirth Education (CEPACE), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), who made the call, said pregnancy and birth were very delicate life cycle processes which exposes mothers and babies to infections, hence the need to make their care a societal concern.

"The country can have a healthy human resource when the needed attention is paid to conception and births," She said

Madam Baffour-Agyei had distributed assorted mother-care items and food supplements to fifty mothers with babies aged 0-6 weeks at the Tema Newtown Heath Centre.

Airtel, a telecommunication group, supported CEPACE under its Employee-led-Initiative dubbed “Make a Difference” with funding.

Madam Baffour-Agyei said her group was targeting the urban poor who needed some support after giving birth under its, “New Born Arrival Package Distribution”, which is also backed by education provided by health professionals.

She advised mothers to consult local health practitioners since “they are well trained to handle their health concerns.”

Mrs Afua Serwaa Atta-Mensah, Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Manhean Health Centre, thanked the NGO for the donation and appealed to others to help the poor in the society.
