GAMLS champions Genomic Medicine training for future medical scientists

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) is taking proactive steps to prepare the next generation of medical laboratory scientists for the rapidly evolving healthcare sector.

Under the leadership of its Public Relations Officer, Dr. Gloria Amegatcher, the association is committed to equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate advancements in medical science.

As part of this initiative, Medical Laboratory Science students at the University of Ghana recently attended a seminar on the transformative impact of Genomic Medicine.

The event, themed "Genomic Medicine: Gaps and Opportunities for Africa," was organized by the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) at the university.

The seminar offered students an in-depth understanding of the potential of Genomic Medicine, highlighting its gaps, opportunities, and ethical considerations.

A key feature of the event was a panel discussion titled "Addressing Legal Framework, Ethical Considerations, and Commercialization Strategies for Genomics in Africa," which provided expert insights into the field's future.

The University of Ghana’s four-year Bachelor of Science programme in Medical Laboratory Sciences equips students with a strong foundation in key disciplines such as clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, histopathology, and immunology.

Through laboratory sessions and hospital rotations, students gain essential hands-on experience to enhance their practical skills.

Upon graduation, students have diverse career pathways, including roles in hospitals, research institutions, and public health.

They also have opportunities to further their studies at the master’s and PhD levels or pursue a Doctor in Medical Laboratory Science (MLSD) qualification.

Dr. Amegatcher emphasized the significance of genomics in modern healthcare, stating, "From personalized medicine to advanced diagnostics, genomics is reshaping healthcare, and our students are at the forefront of this revolution.
