The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has cautioned the public about a rise in seasonal influenza (flu) cases across parts of the country.

In a statement, the Service said the country is currently experiencing increased infections caused by Influenza A strains H3N2 and H1N1viruses that commonly circulate during Ghana’s cooler months.

The highest number of cases has been recorded in the Greater Accra, Central, Bono and Eastern Regions.

According to 3news.com report on October 29, 2025, GHS explained that symptoms of the flu appear suddenly and may include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache and fatigue.

GHS confirms influenza outbreak in four regions

The disease spreads mainly through droplets from coughing, sneezing, or talking, and by touching contaminated surfaces.

According to the Service, children and adolescents in school, the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease are at higher risk of contracting the infection or developing complications.

High-risk environments include schools, dormitories, markets and transport hubs.

To help curb transmission, the GHS urged the public to seek medical attention early when flu-like symptoms appear, stay home when unwell, practice regular handwashing with soap and water, cover coughs and sneezes, disinfect frequently touched surfaces, avoid crowded places and wear face masks when necessary.

On the institutional level, health facilities have been directed to enhance surveillance and diagnostic testing, update case management protocols, and intensify public education through community and media channels.
