GHS confirms influenza outbreak in four regions

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed outbreaks of seasonal influenza across the Greater Accra, Central, Bono, and Eastern Regions.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday October 15, 2025, and signed by the Acting Director-General of the Service, Dr Samuel Kaba Akoriyea.

"The Ghana Health Service has noted an increase in reported cases of Seasonal Influenza (Flu) in some parts of the country, confirmed to be Influenza A (H3N2 and H1N1). The affected regions include Greater Accra, Central, Bono, and Eastern Regions.

"These reported cases coincide with Ghana’s annual flu season which peaks during the cooler months," it said.

The GHS further explained that symptoms of the flu include a sudden onset of fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, and fatigue.

“The spread is mainly through respiratory droplets from an infected person during coughing, sneezing, or talking, and by touching contaminated surfaces,” the Service stated.

It identified schools, dormitories, transport terminals, and markets as high-risk environments for rapid transmission.

It noted that “Children and adolescents, especially those in schools, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and heart disease are at greater risk.”
